    o/t Kidderminster SVR & Mainline Trains

    I know some don't appreciate this type of subject or anything i post. So hopefully with a clear title and my user tagged as a topic starter, nobody will read this who will be offended.

    Today I visited the Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster. I saw plenty of steam trains, videos of which I will upload later. They need editing first because they are a little shaky. Not sure if this was caused by the the cold or the excitement. However, the one thing that really stood out was the contrast between the SVR and the mainline London Midland trains of today. For those not aware the old and the new lines are situated alongside each other in Kiddy. This makes the comparison more striking.

    I know what I am about to type may seem controversial to the steam purists but some may understand. I actually prefer to see the plain workmanlike diesel trains that are in use today. I think its the fact they are an essential part of this countries working day, rather than something, no ma

    To be fair Ron,I prefer steam. Its like a personal thing.

    Each to their own. Personally I think its much better to spend cash on the present and near future than museum pieces of the past. All very well to hear the odd chuff and whistle but would much prefer them to spend money on a decent coffee shop in Kidderminsters real station, rather than an olde tea shoppe in the steam station.

    This country could make a fortune selling a lot of our heritage stuff to other countries. Countries without any real history would pay billions for a bit of ours. Even if they know very little about it. They would probably like some even if it was because they like the colour of it.

    The newer units are much faster,and carry more passengers..steam hauled trains had their day but the modern trains are,despite a bad press,much better..Most of the trains in Britain now are "units" which means they are fixed number of carriages..in steam days they could add a coach or two to help over crowding ,in some cases trains of 15-20 coaches.
    I myself prefer diesel loco hauled trains..

    The Dorridge to Worcester trains that I catch must be the exception to the rule. There are anything from 2 to six coaches at the same time on different days. It is great when the big train comes. You don't have to risk being packed in and stuck next to some stinky soap dodger. And on the packed train it is hard to avoid attempted conversations from the obligatory tank top, trouser and trainer wearing nutter.
