    Alternative view of progress

Many sports have ranking systems where you gain an amount of points based on the quality of opposition AT THE TIME YOU PLAY THEM. Usually individual sports like tennis. I think this could be applied to Derby to see if we are progressing:

My points would be as follows:
    Home
Wins: 26 points plus 1point for each position the opposition are above us minus one point for positions below us.
Draws: 10 points plus 1 per position above minus 2 for positions below
Loss: minus 1 for positions above minus 3 for positions below

    Away:
Wins: 38 points plus 3 per position above minus 1 per position below
Draws: 15 points plus 2 per position above minus 1 per position below
Loss: minus 1 per position below.

If anyone has the time you could do it for each team over the last 2 or more seasons and create an alternative league position through each week.

I was going to use positions as shown by the official table and just do Derby last year and this. Just need to find the data!

    And before I get fl

    WTF!!!
There is a system in place that we all play to.
Why try and create something as meaningless as this?
My brain's still hurting from trying to understand why you'd bother.

Just got fed up with all the subjective stuff about have we or have we not progressed (WE HAVE!) was sitting being bored so was looking at more objective ways of ranking.
Its only a bit of fun. No need to get excited about it.

If you can sort this out I'd be interested to see the results. If not, start from this point on!

    Big undertaking tho!

Actually I was hoping to get to the Rat. He loves his FACTS so he might just do all the sums to prove himself right! And keep him occupied for a bit.

I might just run the numbers myself for a few weeks to see how it looks, its fairly easy on a spreadsheet (I think/hope).

Does anyone know of a site where I can get old results and league tables?

I presume you mean my comment. It wasn't meant as abuse in any way,I was just puzzled as to why anyone would bother.

Sounds like only half a job to me. What about injuries/suspensions for key players and bad referee decisions? Not to mention whether the sun was shining and what the players had for breakfast. If you try hard enough you get statistics to prove pretty much anything you want. As they say, there are lies, Damn lies and statistics.
