Thread: Shearer to Burton

    Shearer to Burton

Scott Shearer has signed for Button until the end of the season. It sounds like he will go there as first choice so a good move from his point of view. Do we have an academy back up keeper for Ben or will we have to go back into the market for another back up keeper/coach?

The club cannot have too much faith in their summer signing who wears the number one on his shirt. On the odd occasion that Shearer has played in the first team, he has not filled me with great enthusiasm. Mind you, we were warned about him when he did sign, from Rotherham fans!

I wonder who is going to coach young Ben now?

I thought that was his main job... coach !!

So will he carry on as a coach?

Pros and cons. Biggish wage off the payroll. They probably thought that he was not the most reliable and obviously Ben has and is improving all the time, probably beyond expectations, no way back into the first team now. What bothers me is the suggestion of bringing in another one on loan. Obviously this player will end up on the bench taking up one of our loan allocation places which seem so precious. This has already kept Stewart off the bench this season due to five (maximum) loan players already being in the matchday squad.

Another one to add he growing list of players signed by Steve Davies who have contributed very little to the cause whilst drawing salaries from the club.

    Very harsh.
Been coaching Ben and I think we would all agree Ben's been very good this season.
I'd say that was contributing quite a bit.

Oh yes, and surely you could at least spell our own manager's correctly!!

According to BBC website he's gone there as competition to their No 1 because their No 2 has broken his leg.

Surely he isn't going there to sit on the bench?

I find this move very odd - agree its a good move to get off the payroll and perhaps at the start of the season was expected to be number 1 for the duration - but he will need to be replaced somehow and now down a coach too - pity we didn't keep hold of SP as he was ideal as coach/number 2! Do we get a loan keeper in to sit on the bench??

It is odd (at least at face value) - he sat on the bench yesterday so he's effectively swopped a L1 bench for a L2 bench as things stand.

I also don't understand why we let him out before we have a replacement in - though, if as reported in The Sentinel, he almost went out on loan in November, then you'd expect we have a replacement earmarked.

I'd be surprised if replacement is a loan because that seems a waste to me given we're only allowed 5 loans in match day squad and we've had four or five in starting eleven regularly recently.

SD did n't do much media last week due to the holidays presumably so I'd expect all to become clearer early next week.

I guess it's yet another feather in Ben's cap in that he has seen off the comeptition but things change quickly in football - injury (God forbid), loss of form - I wonder if there is a 24 hour recall clause? (or are those even allowed anymore?).

    Over to SD for clarification.

When put like that, I agree this one is odd.
Are we saying Burton's need is greater than ours?
Doesn't appear to be on the face of it ...
