    Song Memories

As mentioned elsewhere, I am sure we all have songs that when we hear evoke memories of a distant, (or not so distant) past.

I have a few, I will set the standard low by this little ditty and what it signifies to me.

    Soft Cell and "Tainted Love."

My first shag at some bints place when her parents were out and she had this song playing on the old record player to set the mood.

Good times, her vast experience (she was 20 to my 16) didn't stop me doing the dirty before the song finished unfortunately and that wasn't even the extended version, the Woodpecker cider didn't do its job.

My only visit back to England with my girlfriend (now wife) in 1987.

Played to death on every radio station and in every shop I went in!

Always on my mind (Elvis cover)
    The Pet Shop Boys

I was beaten into submission and still have the 7"
    single in my collection!

Rihanna-Umbrella reminds me of Iraq in 2007?? It was played a lot!!

Alanis Morrisstte- Ironic- Reminds me of 4 months working in Canada in 1996, she was big at the time

The Cranberries-Zombie- was almost No1 when I was deployed to Belfast for 6 months in 1994 (would have been no1 if not for Wet Wet Wet being there for months)

Travis-Why does it always rain on me- Bosnia 1999

Just about every memory I have has a song attached to it to be honest, and I've always been good at those radio guess the year competitions

Skater Boy by Avril Lavigne and that annoying Miss Dynamiteeeee song tortured me when I spent a few months working in a post room whilst at the end of my year in Australia. Both songs were on heavy rotation on the radio at the time, my saving grace being that at least I won't have to hear either again when I get home. Of course, I get home and both had just been released and went on to be successful here too. AAAARRRGH!!!! Every time I hear either nowadays it makes me cringe.

Opus III - It's gonna be a fine night tonight. Mate at Uni woke us up to that every day for 6 months then hid the vinyl so we couldn't destroy it. It was eventually found. Still gives me nightmares.

David Gray - Babylon. First song the band played at our wedding. We hadn't planned a first dance, but I'd had a few so grabbed the Missus up for a dance. Within 30 secs I regretted it so thought I'd encourage a few more up to dance by ditching the Missus and grabbing nearest bird (who just happened to be a very fit Saffa). Not like this has been used against me for over a decade or anything...take note Shotts and Jack!! You either do it or you don't, but don't make it up as you go along!!

    It was torture.

The other song that reminds my of that holiday is Waterfall by Atlantic Ocean, a proper tune is that. - view external link

Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

A 3 month refit in the North East meant staying in B&B's. For most of it we had the same coach and driver between North Shields to Wallsend and back again in the evening, and without fail that was on. I had heard so many bits of it, and parts of tracks, that I ended up buying the 2 LP set just to hear the rest.

Now when I hear any it reminds of that whole period, good friends and great experiences.

An away trip to Derby many years ago, and what a day that was - as far as I know the bus we went on is still in Derby somewhere

...anyway we got back to Southampton by other means and somewhere during that day this became me, or the other way around. - view external link
