    O/T Happy Victoria Day

This is a three day weekend in Canada, Monday, May 18th being the third Monday in May. It is known as Victoria Day in Canada.

May 24 was first declared a holiday by the legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845 to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday. Queen Victoria was Canada's sovereign at the time of Confederation in 1867. The fathers of Confederation could not create the new country without her royal assent. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Parliament made her birthday an annual holiday.

A three-day weekend, another good reason to celebrate our historical connection with England, watch footy and post on Wolves' Mad!

Apart from reigning for a long time, what if anything would you say was her legacy? When I think of that era, I think of a string of PMs (Peel, Palmerton, Disraeli, Gladstone, Salisbury). A higher caliber than most of the 20th century ones, Churchill aside. My opinion of course.

She played a role in a variety of ways, though more in the background. Her emphasis on families and the welfare of wives/mothers and children, brought to light possible ways in which their lot could be bettered. As she gained respect and favour with the public in later life she influenced Prime Ministers and Prime Ministerial candidates as a sign of her respect or dislike for them and/or their policies swayed voters to an extent.

During the potato famine in Ireland she donated the largest amount of money of anyone to their relief. She worked tirelessly to strengthen international relations and ties with France, with great success and was the first reigning British monarch to visit France in 300 years.

She managed to avoid several assassination attempts from a variety of assassins, the majority of these being deranged to a great capacity.

For many in the British Empire she became a figurehead that represented and personified the strength, and success of a land upon which the sun neve

Victoria and Albert loved the magnificent Osborne House, which was their 'holiday home' on the Isle of Wight. Very much worth a visit if you get the chance. I have been there a few times and really loved the place, including the Swiss Cottage which was built for the children.

We passed by the place last autumn, Wokes, on our Isle of Wight three day excursion. Quite modest from the road, but much more impressive from the air, as per your picture above. If we had had a couple of more days to spend on the island we would definitely have had a look/see.
