Thread: O/T Have any of you ever worked on a submarine?

O/T Have any of you ever worked on a submarine?

My morris dancing side have just been offered a rather unusual gig.

There was an old submariner who loved morris dancing who unfortunately passed away last year. He often talked, while at sea, to fellow submariners about his passion for morris and got the mickey taken out of him. He used to say to them "one day you will be under water for 2 months with a morris side as your crew mates"

Turns out the old captain had a huge pile of loot and now his widow wants to hire my morris side to work alongside the crew for 2 months and perform for them on a daily basis and teach the crew some dance routines. The crew want to honour the widows request.

I am seriously tempted. I would get about 10 grand for it but I have heard that you can go insane underwater for so long.

Do we have any submariners on Millers mad who can give me any advice?

    Funnily enough IBS

In the town that I was born
Lived a man that sailed to sea,
And he told us of his life,
    In the land of submarines

So we sailed on to the sun,
Till we found a sea of green,
And we lived beneath the waves,
    In our yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.
We all live in a yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.

And our friends are all aboard,
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play...

    ...and so on...

Hope this is of some use?

Well life on a submarine has its ups and downs and you get to know what a sardine feels like.

Everything is shared including the farts, but you might enjoy the hot bunking arrangements particularly when the Captain shouts "up periscope"

Beware though if they give you one of the small bunks right at the bow end of the boat, makes your ears pop but you're the first to get back to Portsmouth.

Jolly is it true they have a padded room on a submarine where they put people who keep freaking out?

Also, is there enough room on board to perform "the cuckoo's nest," one of the more expansive morris routines?

I think you're mixing it up with the west stand

I am also waiting confirmation about the exact time we will be at seas. 2 months has been mentioned but that seems to be an awful long time to be
    under water.

I can't believe submariners stay under water for 2 months.

I have got a feeling it will have a terrible impact on my morris side. There are two many ego's and artistic temperaments among us to maintain, harmony for 2 months.

We couldn't even manage to stop arguing on a recent trip to a morris dancing competition in Darlington, . By the time we got to York we were at each others throats.

2 months underwater will be murder.

I spent over 23 years on submarines. I can definitely never, ever remember anyone on board craving Morris Dancers? We craved quite a few things, however, and some of those would make you think twice about setting foot on a boat

Monk fish do you need to be mentally strong to do it?

How long were you submerged for? No sure if I can handle being underwater for weeks at a time.

I understand that a well directed flick from a Morris dancer's hankie could take an eye out.

IBS, as luck would have it, I'm currently building a submarine in my back yard. It started out as a sampan but just grew and grew.

When it's finished you're welcome to bring your morris dancers round for a trial period of isolated living.

But, if you're thinking of taking your wife to sea for an extended period, be sure to get the permission of Sylvia's Mother first.

I should add that it won't be a nuclear submarine as the council refused to grant me a nuclear license. I trust you won't be disappointed by this news.
