Motherwell slip up and gift United the game

A draw would have been a fair outcome for both teams. You have to feel sorry for Laing and the rest of them. Still, if you don't take your chances... - view external link

Feel we will play worse and pick up points, think our season could be a case of which team scores the first goal as until United scored we looked confident and played some good football but as soon as we went behind we started to panic.Rushing and over hitting passes and our positional play seemed to go out the window, particularly in midfield think we need to sign a midfielder as a matter of some urgency,as Pearo looks likely to be out for sometime.IMO overall I was fairly happy with the whole team and their performances.

Definite improvement attacking wise over last season but central midfield let us down. MacDonald did not look comfortable playing so deep and that left Fletcher too isolated up front. Leitch looked out of his depth and Law had a mare. Still onwards and upwards. We missed a few chances and they proved costly. United were no great shakes but they were solid.

Strange tactics for me. We have enough strikers at the club to choke a horse and we play one up front at home to utd. Plus points, the keeper and Fletcher up front. But he can't do it all alone, he needs someone up there with him.

Thought we played all right without being special. Baraclough made a decision to swap Clarkson and Leitch and at that stage we lost the midfield. I said to the guys round me the moment he did that it meant the game would not end 0-0. The way it panned out from there United were the only winners. I think the decision to do that was maybe worth a gamble at 85 minutes but not at 73(ish). Johnson and Chalmers both should have scored and the biggest concern for me is we have created loads of chances over two games and scored one goal.

The time to worry is when you are not creating the chances, if you keep creating chances it will turn. For me I'm not that convinced we created that many clear cut chances. Wew got into great positions and had a couple of efforts where we should have scored but frankly our keeper saved us more than Utds saved them. I thought our final ball and set pieces were utter p1sh especially from Johnston. Our style of play has most definitely changed. We rarely gave possession away in the first half and didn't labour on the ball as a result Utd couldn't get the ball. McManus rarely if ever just lumped the ball long and Laing strolled through the match those are positives.

As the game wore on we got more sloppy and the substitutions didn't help. Leitch is exactly the same as Carswell slow and ineffective and we can only hope his days are numbered.

If there was a Motherwell fan in the ground whose heart didn't sink with it being 0-0 on the 80th minute I'd be amazed. We must be the most ut

Agree with much of that Stevie. Unfortunately it looks as though Jack Leitch is simply out of his depth at this level. The Leitch/Clarkson substitution did look odd at the time and it certainly didn't help our cause. We still need to sort out central midfield, which is a critical part of any side and Pearson's absence was crucial. Indications are that we'll sign a player before midweek. I reckon we'll need to sign 2 central midfielders. My guess too is that we'll finish in 9th/10th spot.

Can't believe people already ruling out top 6 we were not that bad we were without 2 big players in oearson and ainsworth and I'm sure more players to come in so keep the faith there is a very long way to go

No ones ruling it out merely suggesting on displays such as yesterday we won't be real top six contenders. We weren't that bad but we weren't top six good either our final ball and delivery from set pieces were honking. Dundee Utd are not a good team but they coped with everything we threw at them. We are 2 / 3 players away from having a real chance of top six. Its early days and lots can change but right now we look like bottom half performers but not relegation material.

If we can keep our absolute best XI fit virtually all season I think we can fight for the top six - but we all know that's unrealistic. Without saying they'll never be good enough, we've already seen that Leitch and Chalmers merely fill the team-sheet rather than adequately replace those in front of them.

Being in the middle of the bottom six without too many relegation worries would represent progress but the unfortunate part of that small step is that it is often grim to watch and boring as hell. There will be plenty of games like yesterday. We'll play ok, we'll win some and lose some without ever really setting the pulse racing, perhaps the odd moment from Johnson or Ainsworth apart. It will be far from glamorous but a decent first step after last year even if it is hard to watch at times or feel inspired
