    Happy memories

    1 March 1961

    Rangers 2 Motherwell 5

I was at the first game but my dad thought me too young for the midweek replay - curses!

[i]As I walked down the Copland Road
    I heard a mighty clamour
    For the boys in blue
    Got f***** 5-2

Strange how certain games go down in history and others don't. It was a great result but was a Scottish Cup tie where very little rested on the outcome and as you mention we did our usual get fpucked out when we've done the hardest part. I would respectfully suggest our two leg 6-1 play off drubbing of Rangers was a far bigger achievement considering what was at stake. I know its a hard call as Im not sure what kinda standard the Rangers team of 1961 was compared to Motherwells team then.

I agree that the play-off was a more important win for the club but in 60/61 Rangers went on to win the league and they were cup holders when we knocked them out.

Agree the play-off turned out to be more important but not convinced about playing down an amazing result just because of what happened next - if we get relegated this season it won't, or shouldn't, detract from the achievement in the play-off win for example.

Interesting point about perception though - the Ancell Babes are widely regarded as one of the best teams in our history yet I've said on here before that had they existed in modern terms, they'd have been slaughtered for being bottlers and Ancell would have been chased by many as am early-day Stuart McCall!

Heh. That's the spirit. Has there ever been a Motherwell team or manager you haven't slaughtered?

Plenty. And I didn't say I'd personally revise the traditional viewing of the Ancell Babes, just that it would happen given the attitude of some to our fourth best-ever manager (McCall).

In my time I'd say McLean, Butcher, McGhee, Brown and McCall did a very good job in their respective circumstances.

Malpas was the only unmitigated disaster though Baraclough would have added to that pile were it not for the trump card of the play-off.

The rest ultimately failed but at least produced some decent moments on the way.
