    The Battle of the Somme

About this time exactly 100 years ago today 6 days of constants shelling came to an end. Then there was silence. Then there were whistles. And at 07:30 on the 1st July 1916 began the bloodiest day in British military history as thousand upon thousand 'went over the top'. By the end of that first day 20,000 British Soldiers lay dead and 40,000 more had been wounded. Don't forget them.
