How quickly things change. Going into the international break, we looked like we were starting to "get it" under Zenga and everybody seemed to be feeling optimistic, even after the defeat to Huddersfield. . This is reflected in the fact that only two posters correctly predicted a result for the last two matches (Makka and Ding both had us losing to Barnsley). In just two matches our solid footing in the table with a decent goal difference went backwards and we are now lower half of the table with a negative goal difference. This is really unfortunate because the Burton and Barnsley matches were ones that I think we needed to get some more points from those matches to have us in good position later on in the season. Back to back home matches against newly promoted clubs, that should be four points in a worst case scenario IMO (and no offense intended to Burton and Barnsley). But here we are, three points adrift of the playoff spots and four away from the drop zone. Still early, but how quickly optimism and hope are squandered.
Newcastle are the clear favorites to win the league. After dropping their first two league matches, they've now won five in a row, with a +14 goal difference in those matches. Lucky for us, we get them in back to back matches in this great run of form, thankfully one is a cup match. Dwight Gayle leads the team with four goals, and Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey also have three each. They are second in the league in goals scored and top in least goals conceded. Won't be easy for us. And in our current form, don't think we have a chance.
