Phillips and O'Kane partnership v Barnsley

These two come in for stick regularly by some.

Thought they were very good albeit against a poor Tykes side. In a game that got quite heated I feared Kalvin would go flying in with a wayward tackle.. but both played with good discipline.

I like Vieira and sure he has a good future, but he must make the worst passing choices in our team, it usually involves him winning the ball then giving it straight back to the opposition.

The two lads gave some protection to the defence.

In our recent poor run Vieira has appeared in most, as Felix hadn't. On that why didn't he have his own keeper cap? tho it worked out better as a PR excercise with him borrowing a fans

I'm one of the people who has little time for O Kane. I much prefer Viera, because he spends a lot of time stopping the other team play. O Kane is lightweight, slow and dithers. I just don't see him contributing anything worthwhile to our performances when compared with Viera, Phillips etc. I can see why Klich might be upset as he's never had a chance to play in CM and show what he can do there, although i'm doubtful he's better than Viera.

I think that if we had a proper, quality centre mid who can tackle and pass and boss the game, like any of three of four that have run games against us recently it would make all the difference. Viera could play alongside to mop up, Phillips would be a great sub to have in there, and we would suddenly have someone creating for Hernandes, Saiz and Alioski plus Ekuban/Roofe up front, instead of them having to create every chance they have for themselves. That would be something to see.

I don't know how you can criticise O'Kane or Phillips after that match but hey each to their own. As said for all Vieira's breaking up of play, too often he plays a poor pass and then we're normally caught out of position... still young so hopefully will get that coached out of him.

Yeah Viera does often play poor passes. We definitely need someone who can pass AND tackle like he does.

I didn't criticise Phillips - he's had a good season - i said that O Kane was nowhere near either him or Viera.

I don't think we can massively congratulate our midfield on that performance on Saturday though - we played well enough to do a job, but Barnsley were awful so O Kane wasn't exposed, and Phillips did a decent job I don't think that midfield two would have done so well against Sheff Utd or any of the other teams that have bossed us in the midfield this season.

Just a mention prompted by my other half that Conor Shaughnessy did a decent job on Saturday on the right when OKane went off and talking of which what the hell has happened to OKanes socks as they've been snipped off at the ankle (has Roofes Mum had a word in his ear about socks attire)

Some players prefer wearing an additional sock layering to keep shinpad in place instead of pads with straps. It prevents sweating its called a crew sock
