    Linesmen awarding penalties

Is this a new instruction from the FA?
Three incidents led to the linesman stopping the game and awarding penalties today two at Anfield and one at Selhurst.. The first was controversial as the linesman then said to John Moss did the Liverpool player touch the ball as if he didn’t Kane was offside. Moss said he didn’t see it and asked Martin Atkinson if he saw anything on TV before quickly going off saying I’m giving a penalty.
It turned out to be correct!

Well we can’t buy a penalty and Spurs get gifted two imo. The through ball is aimed at Kane who is offside so the flag should be raised immediately. The fact that it may have clipped a defender on the way through is irrelevant. The second incident shows a minimal contact with a theatrical going to ground. If those penalties had been awarded against us I’d have been spitting feathers.

They haven't been 'Linesman' for years they are the 'Referees Assistant'. In normal course the Referee and his two assistants discuss and agree on what the referee expects from his assistants with regards to flagging. In this case I suspect that the referee instructed the assistants to flag if they saw an infringement irrespective of whether the referee saw it or not.

    Showing my age there!!
The fact that this happened in both yesterday’s games with the RAs being very assertive led me to wonder if this was a new policy from on high. Both flagged and walked to the corner flag, and signalled to the ref to stop the game -it’s not like the ref waving them away as in my day!
The first pen flag seemed iffy when the assistant wasn’t sure that the defender touched the ball.

There is a specific signal for RA to indicate a penalty and that is to hold the flag stick horizontal across the chest allowing the flag to fall in full over the chest area. This is designed to allow the referee to see the whole flag which should catch his eye.

It did seem unusual, the linesmen have always been able to indicate a penalty to the ref, but they very rarely have done. Suddenly VAR appears and the liner wants to be centre-stage. I don't think it's co-incidence, and I suspect the already chaotic, shambolic refereeing situation is about to get a whole lot worse.

Sorry Claret_Matelot -- that is no longer the case as from the start if this season changes were made

Did anybody see the linesman give himself a little well done elbow nudge after telling the ref it was a penalty.lol
