    Top 300 Classical Pieces

Classic FM are currently playing the top 300 pieces of music as chosen by the public.

They have got to number 70 now, it will continue until 9PM tomorrow (Monday) when they play number one.

For the last few years the favorite piece has been "The lark Ascending" by Vaughan Williams, which I think is a bit meh.

Are there any classical music buffs out there?

    My top three are...

    1/. Symphony number 7 - Beethoven
    2/. Piano Concerto number 5 - Beethoven
    3/. Violin Concerto - Mendelssohn

i like all types of music BT (except rap) but I listen to more classical than owt else these days.

For me, popular music lost it's mojo after the 60's and 70's...perhaps it's an age thing?

But music in the 60's and 70's was raw, people were not afraid to experiment and there has not been much groundbreaking stuff recently. Certainly compared to the Beatles, Stones, Who, Pink Floyd etc etc. There were so many strands of music being evolved - now it sounds very "samey" to me. Pleasant but not exciting.

But if I have time to sit down and listen to music then classical wins hands down for me.

I'm listening to the Prelude to Parsifal at the moment, while I dream up new ways to irritate lefties on here. When that finishes it'll be the Prelude to Tristan und Isolde, I could listen to Richard Wagner all day, and night as well. One piece I do keep coming back to is The Great Gates of Kiev (although I'm not sure that's it's official title) from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a nifty version of it as well, if you're not into Symphony Orchestras.

I love all types of music, and especially rock music, but if I had the choice of listening to a rock band live or a symphony orchestra, the orchestra would win hands down, every time.

He (Wagner) wrote plenty of good stuff Sinkov.

And topically, he was a raging anti-sematic, fiercely German nationalistic and an all round bad egg. He despised all things Jewish, especially music and especially Mendlessohn.

Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich and Dvorak are my favorites, but there is so much good stuff to choose from.

I just canvassed about fifty houses on behalf of our Labour candidate on the social housing estate behind us. On my rounds I asked the hoi polloi how many people had heard the music of the likes of Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich and Dvorak.

One woman replied, "Are you really canvassing for Labour or are you on an April Fool's Day wind up?"

When you are struggling to feed the kids because your Universal Credits have been cancelled, listening to Symphony number 7 - Beethoven or the Piano Concerto number 5 - Beethoven followed by the Violin Concerto - Mendelssohn does not really soothe the Easter anguish. It would help if you hadn't had to pawn the stereo at Cash Cow to keep the family afloat until the Job Centre opens.
