cheapest way to remove scratches from car paint

Has anyone got any tips on how to remove those annoying scratches on cars that appear after you have parked it?

There must be cheaper ways than going for a professional paint job.

I've read that toothpaste can work and seen those ridiculous ads like Renumax (do you get that in England?) that promise the earth but apparently don't work.

I understand that scratches that penetrate the clear coat are a different animal and I din't really like using a paste that cuts the first layer of paint off.

Home remedies that might work, anyone?

    Thanks in anticipation.

There’s the magic pen but some reviews are not good. Tried it and it seems to be lacquer with a highlight pen tip. You have to cut it back. Costs a fiver.

I got a tin of correct spray paint for £10 and sprayed some in the cap let it almost dry and then used a match end cut down to a small point to put the paste into the scratch then wiped across at 90 degrees with a cloth to remove the residue hopefully leaving the scratch filled and the surrounds not messy.
For chips on a level surface I used the match and slowly put the liquid paint into it wiping any excess with a cotton bud and redoing as it evaporates down
