    Vaulks?

I have grown to appreciate Vaulks as the season has gone. The goals, the thrust, the energy and his 100% commitment is great to see.

There is a big but! Yesterday he was playing right back and the team suffered for his inexperience in that position. He wasn't there when Forde was wanting help, his defencive positioning is sketchy for a right back in fact he was having a bad game and in all fairness he should have been replaced by Emmanuel.

Instead Ajayi was unfairly subbed and Vauls took his place! Ok Ajayi was out muscled, out jumped and out timed for their second goal but apart from that he was commanding at the back. His heading was good, his decision making was much better than it has been and his passing game was good.

My view is frog that if your centre back is being out muscled, out jumped and out timed he shouldn't be on the park. So I don't think he was unfairly subbed.

I think like a lot of the team league 1yes but the championship not good enough.
He gives 100% yes and I agree he’s got better this season. I like his effort and endeavour.

I have to say from what I’ve seen (big caveat in that I can’t go to home games so not seen as much of the team as most on here) my preference at centre back is Vaulks and Wood. Lacks pace, but least likely to make mistakes that lead to goals and give the ball away. I definitely think Ajayi can be a right good player but don’t trust him enough at the mo

Yep think Vaulks drops less clangers than Ajayi at centre half. Plainly Warne was concerned we might concede again from a set piece while Ajayi was on.

Not sure I agree with all that Frog but I do think Vaulks should have been the one subbed

I'd never play players out of position if it could be avoided. We've only got one proper right back at the club though (who is a loan player), and Warney had probably told him that he was dropped to the bench following the blunder at Charlton... so we were starting the game with a player out of position anyway. Sounded like Warney thought that Ajayi was having a bad game/wasn't following instructions though, but I'd prefer to see Vaulks in midfield .
Problem really caused by lack of cover at right back . We need to sign two players who can play at right back over the summer to solve the problem, one of those could be Emmanuel?

That is the first game I have seen Vaulks, not being fully committed to the cause. If he is picked,he should adapt and play his part.Warney made a massive blunder by dropping Emmanuel.I was very surprised PW replaced Ajayi and not done a straight swap.I think Vaulks' best position is in central defence,he is not good enough or fast enough to play in midfield. If I was Will ,I would be trying very hard to make that central defending role ,his position, because I can't see how else he would get in the side.

vaulkes strength. heading, tackling, comfy with the ball. good shot.
vaulkes weakness. gives the ball away too much. tries to many long passes, lack of pace.

if he likes it or not CB suits his style. he offers us a lot more at CB than in CM...

ajayi. strengths pace, one on one, heading with back to goal. pops up with a few goals.
ajayi weakness lack of concentration. poor decision making. falls asleep when defending freekicks/corners

this lad has everything to make a top defender though he needs to work extra hard to get there..

depending who the opposition are depends who i would prefer at cb between these two. then we have ike.. he could be a mix of both on early season form.

Yesterday we struggled at both full back positions,as neither got forward like Mattock and Emmanuel do,the reasons for this is,Vaulks simply isn`t a full back, allthough he is very good at CB or CM.
Purrington is a decent defender in the defensive sense, although he offered very little going forward, which is what Warne has been saying all season, which will hold him back in the modern game, hopefully this will improve.
In summary, play Purrington until Mattock is fit,and play Vaulks in a position he is good at,not full back.
