Moncur looks to God for goals

George Moncur is hoping God will provide him with a ‘downpour of goals’ which will keep him in the Barnsley team, starting at his former club Peterborough United tomorrow.

The 25-year-old midfielder has started four of Barnsley’s ten League One games this season and come off the bench in the other six. He is yet to score in the league but has netted in cup matches at Oldham and Blackpool. Moncur said: “I just believe in the lord’s timing because I am a big Christian. Whenever he wants a downpour of goals, let it be.

“I am getting chances but they are not going in at the moment which happens in football. It’s going to be tough to get in the team because we have really good players. I just need to keep working hard to get a spot in the team most weeks. I am playing on the left which I am not used to but I enjoy it because I get a lot of the ball and I can come in on my right foot.”

Moncur was loaned by the Reds to Peterborough in late 2016 just after signing from Colchester United, scoring twice in five League One starts and eight substitute appearances. The Posh are currently second in the table, four places ahead of Barnsley.

Moncur said: “It’s a good club who are doing well, and so are we. I started well there and faded out a little bit. I got a bit of a knock in confidence but I learned a lot about myself because I had gone from playing well for Colchester in League One to not getting a game in League One for Peterborough. It made me want to prove people wrong.”
Moncur’s contract is due to run out at the end of the current campaign. He said: “I have spoken to the club about it a little bit and it’s all positive news. My wife and I love it here so I want to stay here.”

Moncur, who has never finished higher than 14th in a league season, is happy to be in the top six under Daniel Stendel after relegation with Jose Morais in May. He said: “I am used to being rock bottom so it is nice to be higher in the table. I would be over the moon to get promoted and I think we can do it. We’re more of a team compared to what we had at the end of last season. It’s a great turnaround and I am sure it will continue to go in the right direction.”
