    Burnley v Aston Villa Preview

Well the New Year is almost upon us and here comes a genuine 6 pointer (or 6 horn game as we say in the buffalo fraternity) to kick off proceedings in 2020. TBH we both go into the game in pretty shocking form with Burnley being marginally less shocking. The indications are that Villa have a weaker defence and for that reason I will be happy if Mings continues to be unavailable for selection. The wild card for Villa is Grealish who on his day can be unplayable but has always struck me as a bit of a spiv who I would expect to leave for pastures new if Villa go down. We need to get McNeil on the ball and chances flowing for Barnes/Wood/Jay Rod. I dropped a line on the Wolves board in praise of Conor Coady speaking his mind on VAR and they wished us well against the Villa. Let’s hope we all have something to brighten the New Year. UTC!

This is a season definer and a veritable six pointer. I know my head will be banging, but we are going anyway!

I think the Wild Card for Villa might be their goalkeeper, our ex-players have a habit of returning to haunt us, and if Tom's in the mood he could be very difficult to beat.

    Some very worrying stats here.

Burnley are unbeaten in 14 competitive games against Aston Villa at Turf Moor since a 2-0 FA Cup defeat in March 1959 (W8, D6).

Villa have gone 22 top-flight away matches without a win against the Clarets since a 4-1 triumph in September 1929. It's Burnley's longest unbeaten home run against another side in the top flight.

This is the 100th league fixture between the clubs, with Villa's solitary victory in the past 11 coming at home in February 2010.

Villa have only got four points from their away fixtures this season.

    I am worried!

    More stats:

We have had 4 shots on target in the last 4 hours of football!

59_60 If you like to worry about things our only win in the Premier League in the first fixture of the year came at the start of 2019 and that was against Huddersfield 2-1 and this was our 21st game last season.
However, if you want to know about our 21st fixture in all PL seasons, we have only lost one and that was in 2009/10 when we lost to Manchester United 0-3. Since then we have won 3 and drawn 1.

Just to balance things out with this stat from FromTheDarkness:- "We have had 4 shots on target in the last 4 hours of football!"

The overall picture of how we have fared in our first 20 fixtures in our 6 PL seasons is that this is our second best season at this stage and has only been bettered in 2017/8 when, at this stage, we had 33 points and finished 7th, although at this stage we had scored 18 goals and conceded only 17.
We have scored more goals at this stage than in any other PL season, with 23 as opposed to 2016/7 when we had 22.
Apart from the 2017/8 season our goal difference is the best it has been at minus 7.

Compare to the 2015/6 season when we won the Championship and after 20 games had 37 points but had only scored 26 goals.

Plenty of moans and groans from our fans, just like the last 68 seasons I have been going on the Turf, however, we really aren't doing that bad in comparison to recent seasons.

    .

can compare previous seasons till the cows come home, very interesting am sure....but is possible that we could amass more points and more goals than before, but still finish lower than before - equally, spin that around to less but higher - fact is, they're not the same season, conditions change, teams adjust, tighten or weaken, managers, tactics differ, play/players fluctuate...etc etc.
Whats Important is....the area of Now, this season, such as, that for all our intensive defending...we sit joint 5th from bottom on goals conceded....but then, and good for us coming up - so far 'this' season.. Villa has the worst record in the PL for letting in headers 'or' goals from corners !

    Played off the park.Not a shot on target.Second to every ball.Zero creativity,zero pace,defensive mistakes-do I need to go on.
    Tarkowski having a shocker.
That is the difference between a team that invested £100m and one that invested bugger all.
