    I've Got Mine Up!

Bunting that is. Garden party tomorrow with neighbours either side. No one behind us so we can have Hits of the Blitz as loud as we like. Next door's dad was a Chindit now that is brave.

Couldn't have won it without us!

I worked with a guy who fought for months behind the Japanese lines. He was small and swarthy and liked to drink. Nothing fazed him at work and to look at him you would never have thought he was anything special but he must have had guts to spare to survive that hell, drinking filthy water and eating anything they could find and never knowing if there was a Jap behind the next bush or tree.

His dad was one of 10,000 flown in by glider behind Japanese lines in March 1944 in what was then the largest airborne operation. Code name Operation Thursday. I would describe him a a kind, elderly, unassuming gentleman so difficult to believe he did this

Hi Manny, would that have been Dougie Watkins? I remember him well and he would never talk about his wartime experiences, I agree to look at him you would never have thought he went through what he did.

    Hi Tony

Yes you have got him. I remember working with Len Smith on the back bulk and Reg Webb asked where Dougie was as he was late back from lunch. I said I think he went to the toilet trying to cover for him as I was only a first year apprentice. I told Len Smith that Dougie was gonna get into trouble if he did not get back quick. Len looked at me and said: '' Son, that bloke was stuck fighting behind Japanese lines for months. Do you honestly think he is fu**ing bothered by what Reg Webb says.
