Fake Promotion, Sour Grapes and a Bitter Fat Barrow Boy

I was bored so, being a spreadsheet geek, decided to look into the stats as to how the league 1 table had looked on a "round by round" basis. The results are below, sorted by the number of weeks each team spent in the automatic promotion places (i.e. either top of the table or in second place).

I had forgotten just how much Ipswich and Wycombe had dominated the majority of the campaign. They really did mess their seasons up, didn't they!

One thing that jumps out at you, is just how little time the mouthy sourpusses of Peterborough and Sunderland have spent in the automatic promotion places:-

weeks top weeks 2nd total weeks in top 2
    Wycombe 9 12 21
    Ipswich 14 4 18
    Rotherham 6 4 10
    Coventry 3 4 7
    Lincoln 1 4 5
    Oxford 0 4 4
    Blackpool 2 2 4
    Fleetwood 1 0 1
    Peterborough 0 1 1
    Bristol R 0 1 1
    Portsmouth 0 0 0
    Sunderland 0 0 0
    Doncaster 0 0 0
    Rochdale 0 0 0
    Burton 0 0 0
    Doncaster 0 0 0

It does tell a tale dunt it grumps. Send it to the pboro trio! Also tells you that Wycombe have more of a right to promotion than them. I'm glad PPG helped them leap frog Pboro. Now that WAS justice.

Ipswich disastrous just complacency and only themselves to blame. Just pleased that the big clubs in our div have got a bloody nose from the little clubs in the vote.

I can’t believe how Ipswich didn’t make top two.
Headlines on the East Anglian Daily says.....
Ipswich Town have hit a new low.

11th place was a record for them, lowest they’ve finished in 67 years.
Sounds like they’re sticking with Paul Lambert.

Peterborough aren't even a big club Roly, just a big mouthed club.

That away end I sat in this season highlights your point. Accy was a much better away day experience. Love that club and the efforts they made for our fan who died. i hope they go up. But then again it might be nice to nick some of their better players first!

I looked at a few stats from the 74 seasons since 1946/47. Compare us & Peterborough

Quite a lot of people might not know that Posh were not founded until 1934-35 and (apart from WW2) played in the Midland League until they got promoted to the Football League at the end of the 1959/60 season. They were promoted from League 4 in their debut season in 1960/61 season.

Interestingly we didn’t play Posh in a meaningful game until 3rd January 1970 in an FA Cup game at Millmoor when Posh ( then in League 4) as major underdogs won 1-0. I was actually at that game.

Since then the clubs have actually met 36 times with the first league game not being until 1973-74 season which was our first ever season at level 4.

The 36 game record since the cup game reads: 12 draws an 12 wins for each team.

So Peterborough have just completed their 60th season as a league club.

Summary : (as the Leagues changed names I have referred to levels 2, 3 & 4 to give a comparison where level 2 is now known as the. Championship

    1960-61 to 2019-20 = 60 seasons
    Level 2 = 5
    Level 3 = 30
    Level 4 = 25
    ————————————————†”——-
Millers have just completed our 74th season since the end of WW2 and our summary is :

    1946-47 to 2019-20 = 74 seasons
    Level 2 = 27
    Level 3 = 34
    Level 4 = 13

As a direct comparison with Peterborough since they joined the league in 1960-61 our record is :

    1960-61 to 2019-2020 = 60 seasons
    Level 2 = 18
    Level 3 = 29
    Level 4 = 13

Not much doubt about comparative sizes of the clubs I would say.

I was at that match in 1970, too, Nardendee. I took Mrs CT on a visit to Rotherham (she's from the Croydon area) and I can safely say it didn't do anything to raise her already marginal interest in all things Millers...

It's frightening to think that was more than 50 years ago now.

So on the like for like comparison they have spent more time than us at both levels 3 and 4 so they must be better than us

Grumpy, you do know that you have just presented Ipswich with "definitive evidence" that they and Wycombe should have been promoted instead of us or Coventry!!!!

Also, deep fat fryer and crew will call for the season to be voided because the 'correct' overall result wasn't achieved (by the democratic process!!)
In fact, wasn't it DMac that said, last week, we shouldn't be using a voting system to decide things. He obviously forgot the EFL has equal members.

Oh heck Gainsbro, I may have inadvertently fed the trolls. 😀
