What do they teach these young players, how to end your career?

On the other side of the coin do they teach young players to check for banned substances that might be hidden in the formulation of commonly available products?

The substance they found in his test was Higenamine, a substance that is reasonably common in weight loss supplements.

Not that I’m sympathising with his predicament just pointing out that things aren’t always clear cut.

So is this a performance enhancing substance? If a player wants/needs to shed weight, surely training more and an alteration in diet should suffice?

It’s a stimulant, just one of the ingredients found in some weight loss supplements.

Just like you or me could possibly fail a police drug driving test if we’ve got a cold and been overdoing the Night Nurse

Like I said though, not defending him

It could well have been an honest mistake but in the modern world of sport and especially with their livelihood at stake, all professional athletes need to develop an OCD about what they put into their body.

True, but then again footballers generally aren’t the sharpest tools in the box

Another aspect of this case is the ridiculous length of time it took to resolve

If it was an honest mistake then how come he got a two year ban? I’m sure they must have looked into what he had taken

Yes I believe so, that the banned substance was there was never really disputed, just the question over how it got there.
