    Set Pieces

Top Scorers from set pieces in the whole football league last season. 25 goals came directly or indirectly from set pieces last season. What has happened?! I make it Barlaser, Wiles, Mattock, Jozefzoon, Miller, Ogbene & Sadlier who have taken one this season.

The problems with scoring in open play and the lack of goals from our strikers are well documented. We'd all love to see free flowing football and carving teams open at will. In truth though we are never likely to be free scoring at this level from open play and that has been the case in our last few championship campaigns. We need to present a threat from set pieces and we need to be big and strong and physical to account for the obvious technical deficiencies in our side. Last year Barlaser took the bulk of the set pieces. Occasionally he'd drill them in flat but for the most part they were quite predictable; hung up in the air with backspin and a nightmare to defend with our big lads all congregating together and attacking the ball. Why have we deviated from that which brought us 43% of our xG last season?

Even Lindsay took a corner last night. I don't think it's a good idea to rely entirely on one player to take every dead ball, because what happens if/when they aren't playing? However I do find it strange that Barlaser hasn't been taking a lot more of the free kicks and corners than he has so far considering how well it worked last season. I'm sure there's a reason, probably to make us less predictable, but it hasn't really payed off as of yet.

Wiles and Mattock in particular can put a good ball in and took a fair few last season. Don't mind mixing it up a little bit like you said but if if ain't working, go back to what does work! I think we are trying to be a bit too cute

Agree with that, Lindsay is better being in and around when we have corners or free kicks

Combination of smarter defenders and poor form. Barlaser still not come alive yet and is still finding his feet. Our best set piece players are Robertson and wood. One is injured the other deamed too slow for champ..

OT. Wiles needs to be in cm. It's ok warne saying he's versatile he can play anywhere. No he fkin can't. He does his best wherever you play him but we loose what he bring to our team in the centre and most importan position on the park.
If warne insists on playing 5 in midfield it has to be barlaser, Linsey and wiles. Play a FullBack at RB and LB not wiles. Play a winger out wide not wiles.

We're told they practice them all the time in training...
In the first half Josefzoon took a corner, all our players were lined up outside the edge of the penalty box, and what does he do?
He crosses it at no more than waist height which goes straight to one of their defenders on the near post.
Terrific!! I'm sure that came straight out of the play book!

You do know that that is how we started last night until mattock’s injury forced the change?

Yeah but be fair, he did run energetically to the corner flag to take it.

I do and how good were we the first half so why have 3 strikers on the bench. Even if mattock didn't get injured how was warne going to make the subs without playing players out of position? The bench made Mattocks injury even worst. Shocking selection
