England v Ukraine Match Preview: Euro 2020 Quarter Final

Where: Rome Venue: Stadio Olimpico When: Sat July 3rd Kick Off : 8pm

Ah! Rome the Eternal City. Soon to welcome England fans as long as they are not travelling from England to its historic bosom. However the sizeable contingent of English expats in Italy and on the Continent should hopefully ensure some vocal backing for our boys.

A solid display gave England a 2-0 win over Germany in the last round with captain Harry Kane at last getting on the score sheet. He will rightly start up front with Sterling. Trippier who was recalled to the side for the Germany game and actually played in his favoured position on the right should retain his place. Maguire, Rice, Phillips and Foden are all on yellow cards and a booking against Ukraine would rule them out of a potential Semi-Final v Czech Republic or Denmark. Mings will come into contention for a centre back berth if Southgate decides not to risk losing Maguire for the next round. I expect Henderson to come in for either Rice or Phillips and Foden to miss out.

The Ukraine managed by Andriy Shevchenko will feel they have nothing to lose in this game. They are rank outsiders in the tournament but shocked Sweden in the last round and will hope to do the same to England. Zinchenko and Yarmolenko are familiar names but England will have to be wary of striker Yaremchuk. If victorious they are unlikely to celebrate with a Chicken Kiev take-out. Surprisingly this is a Russian dish and not from the Ukraine at all.

I will as usual be watching the match on TV with my iPad tuned into the BBC live feed. The first comment after kick off in our Wembley games has always been a comment by Phil McNulty or one of the other BBC journalists remarking how splendidly positive the response to the knee taking has been. I wonder if we will get a different slice of pizza served up for us in Rome?

    Come on England.

    Ciao!

We should win this one, but so should have Sweden.

No doubt the BBC producer will be in their ear reminding them that must say that Outwood. Reminds me of The Chase, where close to the start one of the contestants will say, 'We don't know what sort of form the Chaser is in', obviously prompted by a producer because 'form' doesn't come into it, the Chaser either knows the answer, or doesn't.

I'm not sure the bookies have got this one right, you can get 4/1 against Ukraine going through, that says they've only a 20% chance of getting to the semis. England are certainly favourites, but this is not a done deal by any means.

Totally agree sinkov. Ukraine are fighters and they have had a lot of upheaval in the country in recent times and football can often be a vehicle to lift the morale of the populus. Schevchenko and team will not lie down, of that we can be sure.

Word on the street (couldn’t find it on my A-Z) is that Gareth is going to revert to 4-3-3 with Mount and Sancho coming in and Trippier and Saka dropping to the bench. That would risk starting with 3 players all on yellow cards. Gareth hasn’t done much wrong yet but neither has Tripps who will be very unfortunate to be left out if the word on the street is correct.

I read yesterday that Tripps was doubtful because he had suffered a muscle strain. I have also heard that Saka had similar problems.

After a promising start we have reverted back to type with the sideways and backwards strategy and once again almost got caught out by a ****e pass by Walker.Ukraine will score. They are technically better than us on the whole. If we play to keep the 1-0 we will get caught out.

They should definitely sack Gareth. He bloody picked Kane and Sterling again and they are hopeless. Kane was only involved in 3 goals and Sterling got his only assist of the tournament. Bloody useless.

They have only played one half decent team so far Sub.Wait till they come up against Spain or Italy.I hope I am wrong but I think even Denmark may surprise us.
