…… describing Schopp as ‘brilliant’.
He then goes on to say that Schopp has changed the playing style to a more passing game - passing out from the back.
I watched every Barnsley match last season.
Some people didn’t like the style we played.
I would describe it as ‘the 14 pound hammer style’.
A big heavy hammer pounding the opposition into submission.
Valerian looked at the Barnsley players and he adapted the style to fit the players.
It worked.
3 tall, fast, strong players at the back.
2 tall, fast, strong players at the front.
IMPORTANTLY - it was clearly evident that our most successful period of a game was when Morris and Dike was on the field at the same time.
This didn’t happen often - Morris usually coming on in the 2nd half.
Which sparked comments at the time that he wasn’t fit enough to do the full match.
So in light of this - and with the loss of Dike - you would think that the club would continue with the successful style - while also adding to that i.e. …….. bringing in more players in a similar mould to Morris that made it work.
I’ve a concern that if Schopp starts to tinker with a success story - to tinker with a team that has been tailored to play in a certain way - then there is a real risk his methods will fail.
IMO - if we want to build on the success of last season then all we need to do is continue with the big hammer style - and to replace Dike with 2 or 3 more target men.
Target men that are similar to Morris - tall, fast and strong.
