Chelsea's debt is currently believed to be well in excess of £1b (possibly 1.3b) - the vast majority of it is owed to Abramovich.

On a similar note.
I was saying to Mrs G the other day that Messi probably has enough of a fortune stashed away to never "work" again.
So theoretically he could look at league 2 and see who was bottom and give them one weeks wages (reported to be £500,000 pw). Then the next week repeat with the next bottom team etc etc
In a year he could effectively save all of league 2 and half of league 1.
His accountant would find a way to write it off as a loss, he would be no worse off and would go down in folklore at 52 league clubs
But no....instead we get crocodile tears

being in debt is not the issue it is the servicing of the debt, once you fail to service the debt then the vultures will circle for any club. Real Madrid get extra protection because of their relationship with the spanish government, football is corrupt anything where the levels of money that is in football is corrupt, it is an illusion to think that it isn't.
