I take back everything I said...turns out it's a genius idea, giving the advantage to the attacker. That Fernandez goal would have been ruled out last season.

This could be the tweak that makes VAR work for the good of the game in the way it was intended.

On a related note, from what I've seen so far (early days, I know), the instructions to the refs to let the game flow more and not give those ridiculous fouls when a player feels contact and dives seem to have been taken on board. I saw several accasions today when players threw themselves down and appealed for a free kick in situations where they would have got one last season but none was forthcoming today.

Not a moment too soon, mind...it was in danger of becoming a non-contact sport. Let's hope it continues.
