O/T:- Paul Merson: A Walk Through My Life

Stumbled across this programme last night, and just thought if anyone had been through hard times, it would be a great watch, or for anybody really. The guy has obviously got/had his demons, but is now turning his life around, and just hopes by doing these programmes it might help someone else, who have their demons too. A truly heart warming programme.

Thanks for sharing that. I'll definitely try and give that a watch. I listened to an interview with him a few years ago and it's frightening what he and other players used to do whilst still playing.

These are great examples of how player welfare and mental health should be a key element of any development pathway.

Couldn't agree more Richard. Some sports are far better at this sort of thing than others.

I haven't seen the above suggestion but will. I found his documentary Paul Merson: Football, Gambling & Me very insightful, raw, honest and a very good watch.

100%, Gazza was scarred from very unfortunate child experiences. Back then there wouldn’t be any interventions as a child and certainly not in football, it’s awful to see what’s happened to him, he could have given so much back to football after his playing days.

This was a very educational programme which went a little deeper than the usual ones which tend to skimp over the issues a little. I really felt for Paul Merson whilst watching it having treated several professional footballers myself over the years. Those and a few thousand other people from all walks of life. Most often I'm happy to say with great success.

Should anybody feel the need for psychological and behavioural education and support for their gambling or as the affected other of someone else who gambles, please feel free to drop me a PM in complete confidence. I will arrange free treatment through the registered charity I work for.

Excellent work and offer Masson4 for those that might need help.

I too have links to player welfare and mental health and have learnt a lot in the past half dozen years. More needs to be done in professional sports. It's improving but a long way to go..

Brilliant post and support. Well done Masson at a time when mental health services are overwhelmed.
