    Clarets v Hatters Match Preview.

    Clarets v Hatters Match Preview.
    Turf Moor.
    Kick-off 15.00 Saturday 6th August 2022.

Vincent Kompany began his tenure last Friday night in the Burnley Football Club managerial hot seat with an encouraging 1-0 away win at Huddersfield Town. The win was obviously important when kicking off a new campaign, but it was the new possession-based style of play that has captured the Clarets’ fans imagination.

Luton will arrive at Turf Moor following an opening goalless home draw against one of this season’s relegation favourites Birmingham City, but I expect the Hatters to deliver a very different sort of test to what the somewhat lacklustre Terriers provided last Friday night.

The Luton gaffer Nathan Jones sprung one of last season’s major surprises in getting his team into the Championship play-offs. Jones employs a physical, direct approach to his team’s type of football and his team were recognized to be the 'bully boys' of the last season’s Championship. I remember the Clarets under Sean Dyche being labelled with such a tag and as often said by the ex-Burnley manager there is more than one way to win a game of football.

Saturday should bring to a near to full capacity Turf Moor two contrasting styles of play, it will be interesting to see which kind of play prevails. The Hatters finished the last campaign on a high note and will no doubt be looking for a return from their first away fixture of the new season. Burnley will be attempting to continue from where they left off at the John Smith Stadium.

One’s to watch: Luton’s Luke Freeman & Elijah Adebayo and Burnley’s Scott Twine and Ian Maatsen.

Verdict: New look Clarets to secure a convincing home victory.

Footnote: Former Burnley & Luton player Alan West became a Church Minister when he retired from playing football. He eventually became the Hatters’ club Chaplain but retired at the start of this season. I wonder who he will be saying a little prayer for at kick-off time?

Yes I will be doing the Match Previews from now on army88. Slightly different format to Sir Outwood but both singing from the same hymn sheet I reckon.

When I took over the job from Tony Scholes I was doing both the pre and post match write ups but Dave Thornley took up the match reports (which I love!) and Sir Outwood volunteered for the match previews. Sadly his time is needed elsewhere.

Now I'm retired I have a bit more time on my hands and I have always enjoyed writing about the Mighty Clarets.

I will private message you my mobile number, perhaps we can have a pre-match pint in the foyer or something?

" his team were recognized to be the 'bully boys' of the last season’s Championship. I remember the Clarets under Sean Dyche being labelled with such a tag"

Indeed they were BT, which I thought quite bizarre, journos and opposition managers often spoke about how difficult it was to play against this team of big, aggressive bruisers, you knew what you were going to face when you rocked up at Turf Moor. Didn't stop most of them winning though did it, Fortress Turf Moor crumbled into the dust long ago, if it ever existed at all.

I used to wonder if they ever actually watched a Burnley team play, did they not notice that we only had two players, Tarko and Wood, who could even remotely be described as big. When we ran out against the likes of United or West Ham, to name just two, it often looked to me like we were playing in the Land of the Giants. I don't have the stats, but if we didn't have the team with the smallest average height in the PL I would be amazed. But it made no difference, teams continued to be bullied by such huge physical specimins as JBG, Cork, Brownhill, Lowton, Mee, Westwood, Vydra, Taylor and Jay.

Two lads I used to play footy with are both Evertonians and to be fair are a right pair of diamond geezers. Do you remember the EPL away game which we won 1-0 at Goodison when Hendrick slotted one home after we made 23 passes without the Toffees touching the ball?

We went to Ormskirk for a night on the pi$$ post match and all they could say was "we thought your lot could not play football?"

On the back of that I always failed to understand why Dyche did not get the lads to get the ball on the deck and play footy instead of keep hitting it long to Barnes & Wood.
