Who chooses the England squad ?

Southgate or the media ? How the hell does Maguire get on the plane to Qatar ? Tarkowski is clearly a better bet, is now playing with a “ bigger club” , and has played regularly this season . What does Maguire bring to the party ? Nothing , that’s what . Words fail me. Something else that fails me is Harry Kane coming off after an hour ,by the banks of the River Trent last night, because he was tired !! His team were 2-0 down and they take off their leading scorer. My God!!

It's not just Maguire, as I expected Dier's going ahead of him as well. The pair of them accidents waiting to happen, and if you invite accidents to happen in WC Finals, they will, they surely will.

Bloody hell alf, I won't be watching the World Cup but you are really trawling the depths with The Crown. Why not try to find some old episodes of The Muppets, at least they were entertaining.
Mind you, if you are really stuck, you could watch paint dry ---gloss takes the longest

Southgate backed himself into a corner with regard to selecting Maguire. No matter how many clumsy tackles Maguire has made for both Manchester United and England or goals conceded because he was caught in possession or out of position GS was ALWAYS going to select him ahead of better performing centre backs. That is the sign of a poor manager. It isn’t just Maguire though because he is also gambling by selecting players who are injured or simply not match fit. I have said I won’t be bothered to watch this World Cup because it should simply not be taking place in Qatar. Probably I will buckle if England do make it through to the knockout stages in the vain hope that by some sort of miracle in the desert we win the Cup in spite of everything.

I agree with you, Outwood. Holding the World Cup in Qatar is a disgraceful decision based upon corruption. Blatter has come out and admitted that.

As for Southgate, why he is still Manager of England I do not know. I read that only 33% of players in the PL are English. However, within that 33%, there must be better players than Maguire and Dier, for example.

We shall see - I predict another disappointing tournament, with Southgate looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

There is one glimmer of hope, he's picked Maddison, I didn't think he would, but I'll hold my hand up, I was wrong. Whether he'll actually play him is another matter, as is whether he can get the best out of him if he does, but at least it is one small step in the right direction.

sinkov, did he pick him though? In my opinon the media picked him and Gareth could not/would not ignore them and the same thing will happen when it comes to team selection ---the media want Maddison and Gareth will pick him.
IT's a bit like who is running the government ---you know what I mean.

Phillips going and not fit, Walker likewise, Sterling, Maguire and Trent Arnold all in shockingly bad form and all three out of form players are going.

That's 20% of the outfield squad suspect. Who banged Southgate on the head?
