I personally hope that the visit works for Zelensky and that yet further assistance in terms of military and humanitarian aid, as well as further sanctions ( a recent report on the level of foreign ownership of properties in the UK includes several pro-Putin oligarchs amongst others using this as a ruse for both making and laundering money), is approved.
The hardships of the economic situation are not going to change for many anytime soon (though, undoubtedly, some will benefit from it as ever) but surely, after years of cost-cutting, more money must now also be allowed for the the defence budget. The world has grown a more dangerous over recent years and it would seem foolish not to recognise this and respond to it.
Hope he’s given the red carpet in London!
An absolute legend of what a leader should be!!!
Nobody had heard of him twelve months ago. Sorry but I'm not buying into it.
Ukraine and Kiev were founded by the Swedish Rus, they settled there changed their culture and habits and became known as Russians.
It's a civil war, not our problem.
I have no inclination to be living in the stone age in a nuclear winter.
The media is full of this stuff to distract you from what is happening here, pensioners dying of hypothermia, families using food banks and sadly once again the sheep are following the flock like they did with Covid.
Anyone seen any Astrazeneca lately?
Given the history of the region I can see how some may view it more in terms of a civil war but Ukraine is still a sovereign country and Putin has led an illegal invasion. Of course, there are still those in the eastern provinces who are pro-Russian but the vast majority of the country wish to maintain their independence from Russia.
It cannot be ignored that in terms of corruption and equalities, Ukraine is hardly a bastion of freedoms but I believe Zelensky is genuinely working to change this. As for Putin, I really do believe that he does pose a wider threat. He may not be as bad as Hitler or Stalin, but to stand by and simply watch him invade Ukraine was surely never an option.
What would Europe be like now had Britain not eventually stood up to Hitler following his invasion of Poland ? Would Hitler not have then decided to continue to expand westwards as well as eastwards? If Putin was allowed to pursue his interests in Ukraine without Western intervention, would that then not only encourage his interests in other ex-Soviet bloc countries? Western democracy is far from perfect, but I'd argue most would much prefer this system than living in a state overseen by a Putin or Xi Jinping!
There are differences between the Russia/Ukraine situation and Hitlers uprising. Hitler had the means to take Europe, when Russia can barely take Ukraine. They take one step into NATO territories and it’s a mandatory war. Basically, Putin will stop at Ukraine because he has no choice. I don’t think appeasement would make a difference.
From a moral point of view, we should be supporting Ukraine but it’s not worth nuclear war.
There has been a prediction since nuclear weapons came around that no two nuclear forces will declare war on one another due to the assurance of mutual destruction. I think that will always be the case. They are called deterrents for a reason.
I understand the support for Ukrainians but find it hard to forget the vile abuse they give to black players from England and other nations during matches.
After the war is over I wonder how long it’ll be before they’re throwing bananas at our players again?
I don’t think that you can relate any football issues with this vile war. No doubt that had Russia been allowed to walk over Ukraine, they would have targeted another former Soviet state. Warmongers like Putin never stop of their own free will, many examples in history attest to that fact. If Ukraine doesn’t stop Putin, someone else will have to.
Good post Ketts. To the point...👍
