A Cautionary Tella Tale of 2 Nathans

When Southampton FC appointed Nathan Jones as manager in early November they can hardly have foreseen the haphazard turn of events that would follow. A disastrous run of league defeats interrupted by a lone victory at Goodison were accompanied by enough bizarre quotes from their new manager to fill a Douglas Adams songbook. Some decent Cup results were a mere sideshow and when Wolves stole all the points at St Mary’s despite playing most of the game with 10 men the axe fell. From the Burnley point of view -and very fortunately for us indeed- Nathan Jones decided, despite his team’s shocking lack of firepower, that he would not recall young Tella from his loan spell at Turf Moor. Tella has underscored the error of that decision by ramming in 5 goals in his last 2 games for the Clarets. Just how much will he cost in the summer should Saints suffer an almost inevitable relegation and decide to sell is anyone’s guess. Nothing in football should come as much of a surprise when the latest turn of the managerial roundabout brings Colin out of retirement and back at Huddersfield.

Jones was a shocking appointment. If Tella's heart is at Turf Moor, the Saints will just have to go marching on without him.

They gave Nathan Jones the job when Sean Dyche was available. You reap what you sow.
