A victim of our own success

    Head coach gone.
    Captain gone.
    Goalkeeper gone.
And now speculation surrounding FIVE 1st Team players.
Styles, Kichen, Williams, Kane and Leya.

Looking at the Premier this weekend - especially now Luton are in the Premier - there’s a long list of players that have been on the books at Barnsley.

Personally I think we should look on the bright side of this.
Yes the club is under extreme pressure to keep hold of its coaches and players - but the alternative to this is supporting a club that has coaches and players that nobody wants.

IMO - these are exciting times at Barnsley.
Let’s hope Khaled gets top dollar for each player that’s sold so that money can then be used to bring other quality players in.

Does all of this sit under the banner of steady progression or is it a fire sale AGAIN?

This 'model' doesnt work does it?

You forgot Connell from your list.

As long as we have the present owners this will always be the case, buy cheap and sell at a profit so it’s a case of if you’re willing to watch your football on this system. I for one have had enough and barring a miracle of us going up this season this will be my last season ticket.

I can’t blame the players wanting to go to a more ambitious club on far better money but losing quality players and hoping you can replace them with none league players is a very risky business which you’ll only get away with for so long before you bomb.

Things will never change until we have owners who want a successful football team on the pitch as well as on the bank balance but Barnsley aren’t a fashionable club for rich investors so I don’t hold my breath of that ever happening.

It’s not something I would describe as a fire sale - as obviously the club has put a holding price on every players head and if other clubs don’t meet that price then they arn’t leaving.
Which is completely new and different to how things have been done in the past.

We need to give this model time.
IMO - this season is Season number 2 - as previous seasons before that were greatly influenced by Conway.
So we need to wait - but on the face of it it’s looking good.
The players brought in look great and once the transfer window closes and the team settles down then I think we will have the strongest squad in the league.

    Regarding Connell.
I’m guessing here - but nothing has been said by the club regarding the nature of his injury.
Nothing mentioned about a physical injury or even something like a virus.
So I’m guessing it could be something psychological.
If it’s something related to a transfer then because of his lengthy contract Barnsley are in for a big payout.

The last time we went down this road, selling so many first choice players, we got relegated without do much as a whimper. We still haven’t recovered yet.

You’re welcome to think it’s a good idea because there is some cash in it. That’s how our owners think.

Forgive me for not sharing your opinion that these are ‘exciting times’.

I don’t know where you get strongest squad in the league nudge? I still think we look like headless chickens in defence but that might alter when if the French lads ok and Okeeffe is fit. My main concern though is the strike force, I’ve seen nothing to suggest we can score enough goals to be serious contenders especially if Cole hit a bad patch.

Whilst I have major concerns which are mainly around our defence I do not have any concerns about goal scoring with or without Cole , since the turn of the year we are the highest goal scorers of the whole efl which I read about last week but we did not & do not have a 20 goal a season man but what we do have is goals from all over the pitch , I am not sure which game it was towards the end of last season but we played a game where the whole of the outfield players on the day had been on the score sheet during the season , a fact that I had never known in the history of our club & this season I expect much more of the same, with goals coming from our wing backs, midfield , strikers & from our central defence , its stopping the goals that worries me , lol !!

I presume you mean the fire sale when Patrick was in the process of selling the club.
The Hecky / Hourihane fire sale.
Hecky said on the radio at the time ‘we have EIGHT 1st Team players up for sale.
January and only one point from the playoffs.
That definitely was a fire sale.
Although Patrick appeared on iFollow to say that ‘it wasn’t a fire sale as Young Nudger was describing it’

But IMO it was - as the big difference then compared to now is that there are players being brought in now - which there wasn’t back then.

I think we have recovered - but the club has yet to build on a season of success.
We still haven’t seen a sequence of 2 successful seasons.
That’s because Conway has had a finger in the pie.
As said - IMO this coming season is only the 2nd season of the new start.
Some might describe this as the first season - as last season was spent running around the ship putting the Conway fires out.
In that context to finish 4th can only be considered a great achievement.

One question. Where was the success. Or is it like school now , where you get a medal for losing.
We haven’t had ANY success. Non, in the last 3 years…Nothing.
Losing at Wembley isn’t success, Losing good players isn’t success,

The only "success" most fans are bothered about is success on the pitch that derives from building and retaining a squad of gradually increasing quality season after season.

All I can see from the present leadership is a gradual reduction in squad quality caused by the ratcheting down of the leagues we are recruiting from, most as free agents.

But as long as it brings in income so the owners are not required to contribute then, "Rejoice! Go Well Barnsley !"

BBS Accountant Archerfield sums it up as follows---
    ST and Matchday Ticket income---£3milliom
    Merchandise/ Sponsorship/ Commercial income--£2million
EFL Contribution to Third Division clubs (TV money)--£2 mill (as opposed to Championship £8.6 mill per club)
    Total Income £7million

Annual Running Costs (mainly playing and non-playing staff salaries) ---£13 million

Annual shortfall of £6 million to be made up with transfer trading surplus plus taking into account phasing of payments. No reserves in Account

So yes, lets rejoice at money coming in. Lets rejoice at players coming in being not as good reducing the overall squad quality. No one can really claim this coming years squad is stronger than last years or that they will be organised better--and the situation will probably get worse over the next two weeks.
