Actor David McCallum has died aged 90.

Recall him well from the Man from Uncle series as a kid. He had a great TV career right up to his death.

Scottish actor David McCallum, who rose to fame in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in the 1960s and was the eccentric medical examiner in the NCIS 40 years later.

McCallum died on Monday of natural causes surrounded by family at a hospital in New York.

A statement from CBS said: "David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away."

Scottish-born McCallum appeared in several films during his early career like The Great Escape and The Greatest Story Ever Told but it was his role in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. that made him a t.eenage heartthrob in the mid-60s.

I remember him more for Sapphire and Steel with Joanna Lumley, I used to like that despite it's slightly odd premise for a program.

Funnily enough I noticed an episode of the American drama NCIS on in the background somewhere recently, and was surprised to see David McCallum appear in that.

Magyar, can you recall him in in mid 70's in The invisible Man? It wasn't on long if I recall correctly. As for him being in NCIS, he played the part of Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, an eccentric and skilled professional who served as a patriarch to the show’s investigators. Always in the background but invariably popped up in a lot of the shows.

Strangely I was watching an episode of NCIS and his character Donald "Ducky" Mallard was on screen when I discovered he had passed away.

Remember him well in Man from U.N.C.L.E, Sapphire and Steel and as Brin has reminded us the Invisible Man.

Don't know why but one episode of Sapphire and Steel involving a WW1 soldier's "ghost" writing the figures 11.11.11.11 in an old railway station sticks in my memory.

I'm not sure Brin.
I had a look on IMDB to check the title of NCIS, and saw the accompanying picture of "The Invisible Man" and it did ring a faint bell.
I've just looked again and it was '75-'76 so I was only 8 or 9 but maybe saw re-runs perhaps.

I did have a scan again through other things listed and it's astonishing the breadth of things he was in on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ranging from "The Six Million Dollar Man" to "Heartbeat" and all.manner of things in between, including film.

Two particular things I was reminded of seeing him in were "Colditz" and "Mosquito Squadron"

Such an impressive body of work and going right up to the end.

Turned out his was killed 11 minutes after the end of the hostilities if I re-call correctly

His son, Val McCallum (from his marriage to Jill Ireland,) is a well recognised session guitarist. He has toured with Jackson Browne and plays on his more recent studio albums.
