    O/T:- Harry Arter

After all this time, I had no idea that Harry Arter was still a florist. I was reading an article in The Athletic about Harry Maguire's situation, and it went on to show parallels with Jannik Vestergaard at Leicester, and then:

    "Harry Arter is another instance.

He continues to be a Nottingham Forest player despite their best attempts to move him on following their promotion to the Premier League 15 months ago. The now 33-year-old midfielder has played just 14 times for Forest since joining from Bournemouth in September 2020, and was sent on loan to Charlton Athletic and Notts County in the season they went up via the Championship play-offs.

Arter described his time at Forest as “disappointing” when he joined non-League Notts on loan, but a promotion clause in his Forest contract saw his salary rise to a reported £40,000 a week with their return to the Premier League, which has made finding him a move away from the City Ground difficult.

He remains under contract until 2024, and despite not having played a senior game for Forest since January 2021 looks set to see that out."

Arter didn't look or play like they spent 5mill on him

This has come up from time to time on here, obviously because of his spell with us where he started okay but then faded.

Arter in his early days at Bournemouth was a very good player, hence the international recognition, but since around 2016/2017 his form has dropped off a cliff. There seems to be a rough correlation between the loss of form and his daughter very sadly being stillborn in December 2015, which would be an understandable reason for football not to seem as important to him as it was previously, but if that's the case then does there come a point where, out of respect for your fellow professionals, you have to ask whether you're still in a position (mentally or physically) to contribute and take a very significant wage for doing so?

Mark Stallard, for example, when he retired from football at Corby Town, stated his belief that it was unfair to take a wage from the club when he was no longer performing at their level, and we've seen just this past week that Ben Foster has stopped taking a wage from Wrexham for much the same reasons.

That said, it's difficult to argue Harry Arter is doing anything "wrong". It was Forest's decision to award him the contract they did, and I dare say a lot of people would force their employer to honour such a contract if they were in the same position as him. The biggest risk for the player I suppose is reputational, in an industry where the expectation is that players want to play and will force a move if they can't, but at 33 years of age on that money for the past few years, he probably doesn't need to worry about his next job.

In his defence, why would he? The bloke got married before our failed playoff campaign, so not sure why he would give 100% and risk being injured for that. Especially for a loan side.
He will have picked up a cool 4.1m in wages at the end of his contract in the time Forest have been in the Prem. Let alone whatever else he earned.

£40,000 a week for doing sod all, just let that sink in. I never thought I would say I that I respected Ben Foster, while we were duelling with Wrexham last season for the NL championship, but it shows decency to walk away from a guaranteed decent wage every week, admitting you are stealing a wage in effect, (I realise he is not short of a bob or two).
I wonder what other players at the Red Dogs think about HA.

I’d imagine they wouldn’t give a sh1t. Like Arter, they are all under contract. I’d also like to draw to you attention that that Arter isn’t the only player at Forest or any Club earning a wage whilst not playing. You are aware that the Premier League restricts squad size and that many players don’t make those squads?

Forest could have paid off Arter, but have chosen not too.

I am aware he will not be the only one, which makes the whole Prem circus even more distasteful.

There is no comparison, Foster was already retired when money bags twisted his arm to come out of retirement. As for Arter, i dont him one little bit for taking the money. I would do the same under those circumstances. The club are at fault for giving him the huge wage rise, and this will be his last pay packet in football when his contract ends.
