    Clarets v Toon match preview.

Clarets Mad - Clarets v Newcastle United, English Premier League Match Preview.
Venue: St. James’ Park, Barrack Rd, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 4ST.
    Kick-off – 15.00 – Saturday 30th September 2023.

After the Toon’s 8-0 obliteration of Sheffield United last weekend no-one will give Burnley a hope of getting anything from their latest English Premier League fixture at St. James’ Park. A mate of mine who is a true Geordie, and a crazily devoted Toon fan even suggests I take an abacus to keep a tab on the score line!

Former Burnley boss Eddie Howe has recently managed a draw in the Champions League in Milan, an overwhelming win in Sheffield and has just knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup. What chance do Burnley have against such in-form opposition? One thing is for certain Vincent Kompany will be working his socks off to conjure up a result on Saturday.

The Clarets travel north (probably by bus) following Tuesday night’s 4-0 win at Salford setting up a visit to Goodison Park in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. The tie pitches Sean Dyche versus Vincent Kompany and will certainly capture the fans of both team’s interest. The immediate problem for the Burnley boss is to avoid getting run over by the Newcastle juggernaut.

Last season’s wing wizard Annas Zaroury was too hot to handle for the Salford defence on Tuesday night and it will be a surprise if the lively Moroccan does not get a start on Saturday afternoon.

One’s to watch: The Clarets will once again be without the highly rated Lyle Foster so Swiss striker Zeki Amdouni looks set to lead the Clarets line with Luca Koleosho, Mike Tresor, Aaron Ramsey and Zaroury all coming into contention to face a rampant Newcastle line-up.

For the home team Howe’s men are now unbeaten in four games after a run of three straight losses; Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all contributed to Newcastle’s return to form. Eight different players scored in their 8-0 humiliation of the Blades last Saturday so it’s obvious the Clarets defence are in for a turbulent afternoon.

Verdict: Sadly, I must conclude it has got to be an exercise in damage limitation for me, I expect the Clarets to get beat by a 4-1 score line and move on to beating Luton away and entertaining Chelsea and Ian Maatsen at home next weekend.

Footnote: It will seem like an old pal’s reunion with Eddie Howe, Nick Pope and former Clarets’ fans favourite Kieron Trippier all on parade to face Vincent Kompany’s new look Burnley team on Saturday afternoon. Howe certainly displayed an eye for recruiting some serious footballing talent during his twenty-two-month managerial tenure at Turf Moor.

Ben Mee, Charlie Austin and Danny Ings were amongst an all-star cast recruited by Howe with the now 33 years old Trippier probably being the pick of the litter. Even though Trippier is now seemingly approaching the twilight of his career on the evidence he showed during a match winning performance against Sheffield United, he is still every bit the player who arrived at Turf Moor back in January 2012. I wish we had kept him. (TEC).

I watched the Newcastle v City game last night, if ever there was a game of two halves this was it. Newcastle, completely outplayed in the first half, were a different proposition in the second half. Which Newcastle will we face, or does it matter if they can turn it on and off like a tap. Just 20 minutes of a top form Newcastle could be enough to see us off.

I hope they don't forget to turn up at Luton on Tuesday night.

Still think of it as the League Cup. Someone/s have probably made millions by selling it’s name, we will never know.

I still struggle to take the competition seriously, no one in the top two divisions puts out their best teams, how can you take it seriously ?
