First of all let me say that I did not watch last night so I cannot comment on any individual performance but what I can comment on is our defending at Oakwell so far this season & the word dreadful is the first word that comes into my head , for the 4th time this season we have concede 3 goals in a home game & we are only in the first week of Novemebr , I have pointed out in other threads that we have lost an entire back 3 that took us to a whisker of promotion & replaced them with potential , in fact it is worse than that as one of the replacements is a full back who should be playing at full back , we have no commanding defenders & no leadership which is frankly not good enough , now there are opinions on this forum that suggest we have replaced the departures with quality well I am sorry at this stage that is wrong , also some are of the opinion that we are competing for automatic promotion , again with our defence as it is there is absolutely no chance of the autos , now maybe a change of formation or a change of personnel in the team might solve the problem but to be fair our new head coach is showing that he is also a rookie & tactically he like the new players is learning his trade , therefore I can only conclude that a top half finish might be on the cards but with defending like we have been displaying then promotion or even play offs is beyond our capabilities . Footnote ; well done to Horsham and their fans .

It's the job of Neill and Jon to sort out the defensive organisation with the players they have been dealt.

The owners/ CEO/ James Cryne have kept within the financial remit of spending very little on recruitment, leaving it to the HC to sift through the possible potential and construct a defence. There is no experience at the back this season--no Solbauer, no Helik, no Andersen, for the young players to watch and learn from.

At present our league position is living on the 7-0 for the goals scored and goal difference and the fact that all our away fixtures have been against bottom half clubs.

The real away season begins at Derby next Saturday.

I don’t think it’s the quality of defenders that’s at fault.
It’s the system we play that’s at fault.

IMO the centre backs we have are good enough for this league and probably the Championship.
But we have wingbacks that don’t know when to stick or go - and are often found stranded up field.

And as for the mid midfielders - I understand the role of the anchor midfielder ie Russell but does anyone know the role of Kane and Styles ???
These two are neither protecting our back 3 - or running with the ball to attack the opposition defence.
They just seem to be there to keep hold of the ball once we’ve got it.
Back back back sideways sideways back sideways.

Consequently when the opposition gets the ball there is only Russell available to defend and as such. the 3 centre backs are often exposed.
That’s why I think we need two anchor midfielders (Russell and Connell) and go 343 - which would mean moving the ball quicker forward - not allowing the opposition time to get into their defensive positions.
The 343 would also be more exciting to watch.

I’m not a bit convinced by Collins.
We have the players.
Collins needs to play them in the style that has identified them as players suitable for the Barnsley Way.

Nudge , I have just watched a 9 minute highlights video of the game last night & if you were not at the match I suggest you do because you may want to amend your comment about the quality of defenders being at fault , the defending for all three of their goals was schoolboy at best in fact Sunday league might be a better description , it was shocking , concentration level = zero .

It's difficult to ascertain what goes off on the pitch as every head coach that we hire has their own interpretation of how we set up and play. From Stendel onwards, every coach has had the team playing different from their predecessors.

It's like Hecky if tha guz back further. He played vibrant high press attacking football with that 2016 promotion team until the rug was pulled from underneath him and all the talent was sold. He then had to change the style and go defensive with just Bradshaw up front. That was because we didn't adequately replace the departures of our more influential players. Sounds familiar.

The Barnsley way has never existed. We just muddle through year to year without any continuity or identity.

I watched Leeds beat Leicester last night. Now that was high press football by Leeds. That's how it's done. I've not seen intensity like that at Oakwell since Ismael was coach.

Val's football looking back was pure underdog football , it wasn't all industrial but it was cringeworthy enough .

It was acceptable because we bloodied the noses of the big boys and it cheered us all up at a very difficult time in history .

And it was cringeworthy , when I got back to work and some of the lads who supported other clubs had watched us it was hard to defend some of their anti football comments even though we were winning .

Even though we all know Conway was a dyck he was right about the players not attracting bids , they didn't attract bids for a reason and that was because of the style of play , the football market wasn't convinced and they were right not to be convinced .

A pure underdog tactic that has no place in league one when you are a club who should be competing at the top of it , I don't believe the paying fans would tolerate it either .

If we were in the championship with ten games to go and in the bottom three and that style of football got us safe then that's a different thing altogether .
