Middlesborough in Teesside was just a collection of muddy fields & small farms once.
With the discovery of ironstone, then the arrival of the railway Middlesborough saw the birth of iron & steelmaking so a whole new workforce was conjured up & housed.
Up to a few years ago, Boro had no real nickname unlike those close by Magpie Newcastle fans (Geordies) & the ‘Mackems’ of Sunderland so their Boro tag fast became the ‘Smoggies’ in the NE football world !
As anyone who visits know - the name refers to the heavy air pollution once produced by the local petrochemical industry works.
Owner Steve Gibson, is Boro born & bred. He founded Bulkhaul Ltd, a company dedicated to the global transportation of bulk liquids, powders & gases.
He'd set up the company by borrowing £1,000 from his Dad.
He helped save the club from liquidation by forming a consortium in 1986 & moved them into a new 34,742 capacity, £54 million stadia.
By 2022, Gibsons holding company had an estimated net worth of £148,475,000.
Boro have lost over the years £233 million & the vast majority of those losses have been covered by Gibson, either through buying shares in the club or lending money to the club.
Boro's last recorded gross debt rose £19m from £129m to £148m. Almost all of this is owed to owner Gibson, who increased his loan by £22m to £142m - so quite a genuine guy !
Boro tactics ?
Well they play a very fast paced 4-2-3-1 & they've beaten Leicester !
Head coach Michael Carrick is now assisted by former Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate who have formulated this quick possession style of play this season.
They arrive at ER after hammering Preston 4-0, with Isaiah Jones netting twice with summer signings Rav van den Berg & Bangura hitting their first goals for the club with Boro 3 up by half-time !
They've changed players of late fielding a very different-looking backline but still have Paddy McNair an experienced leader in there. He's N.Ireland captain who leads by example for Boro with dominant defending when needed & creates very intelligent plays with the ball at his feet stats show.
Matt Crooks creates most of the Boro chances playing up front so he needs to be nailed onto by our defence for sure at all times.
Boro's ROI international Lenihan has now been ruled out.
In a local interview Carrick recently explained how being respectful of Leeds he'll be looking for a performance from his team like the one of Leicester's visit to Riverside, when he went against the grain of looking to dominate possession in that game by instead being happy to concede possession to their opponents & was looking to hit them on the break !
That 1-0 victory came courtesy of a stunning on-loan Greenwood free-kick strike, gained by a swift counter-attack stopped by a foul.
That was Greenwoods 4th goal in 6 games too. ☹
It seems he cannot play against us whilst on loan & Boro fans verdict on him is mixed for sure.

Particularly interesting was the tactical briefs given to Dael Fry & Jonny Howson in that Foxes game, with the duo given a strict tactical man-marking brief on Leicester's wide men stopping them cutting in.
Defo comfortable on the ball & are a well disciplined unit too.

Suspect they will come to ER & play the deep lying game.
Boro sold their 2,900 tickets for the 72 miles to ER trip via a reciprocal pricing agreed deal.
Adult: £29, Over-65: £20, Under 18: £16
Wheelchair Users & PA have access to 17 bays with Ambulant & assistants, priced as above.
Should be a decent game & terrific atmosphere as Boro travelling fans are always vocal & come with an array of 'taunting' chants for ER.
Stats state their no mugs, mmm.
