    Fleetwood Ratings

Bass 6.5 - Couldn't do much about either goal and wasn't really tested otherwise.

Macari 6.5 - Should've closed down their player quicker for their second goal but got a good assist for Jatta.

Platt 6 - Did okay, although caught out by basic long balls pretty easily and was pretty lucky not to be sent off.

Bedeau 6 - Similar to Platt, did okay but was part of a defence that conceded two really poor goals so can't rate him any higher.

Chicksen 6.5 - Did fine really. Much more comfortable at lb than lwb.

Hinchy 6.5 - Thought he did pretty well. Got stuck in at times and played some pretty decent passes.

Grant 6 - Played some decent passes and had some nice touches but looked cumbersome and tentative at times too. Could've scored a rebound in the first half but bottled out of it.

Crowley 7 - Always looked positive and to play forward. Put in some great balls and some not so great ones too. Probably should've scored in the second half too.

Jones 7.5 - Some poor final balls but everything went through him and he beat his man time and time again, plus kept his composure well when they tried to delay his penalty at the end. Just hope he wasn't injured, how that challenge wasn't a red I don't know.

Scott 4 - Genuinely don't know what he offers anymore. A decent servant for the club in the national league but clearly not up to league two standard, especially when shoehorned onto the left wing. Plus he lost his man for the opening goal too.

Jatta 6 - While he did score I still wasn't overly impressed. His movement and holdup play were poor and he was also at fault for the opener.

Palmer 6.5 - Does what he always has, great to have him back and hopefully he isn't too far off starting.

Tsaroulla 6.5 - Immediately looked positive although his crossing was a mixed bag. Did win the penalty though.

Robertson 6 - Similar to Palmer, although did nearly have a Baldwin moment.

McGoldrick 6 - Allowed Tsaroulla to get in behind for the penalty, got to start ahead of Scott against Grimsby.

Good ratings. I thought Scott was better than 4, he is quite a clever footballer and contributed some decent build up play, although that left sided forward role is definitely up for grabs between him and McGoldrick.

Tsraoulla made a huge impact and maybe deserves a 7. Brings a directness that we sorely need and I hope we don't coach it out of him.

I would maybe swap Jones and Crowley around with 7 and 7.5 respectively.

Agree about the defence. They looked better in the tackle than last season's version but if we're going to give two sloppy goals per game away again, we may as well give up now. Hopefully just teething trouble, and things like 3 players on the line with nobody closing down won't happen once they have had a bit more time together.

Great to see Palmer back, but Tsaroulla was the big story of the day for me.

    Match ratings vs Fleetwood

First of the season for me so here goes

Bass... 7.. Nothing he could do about the goals, good save from their free kick, good handling and kicking
Bedeau.. 7.5 ..defensively ok...saw a lot of the ball, did ok
Platt... 7.5.. won his fair share, usually a cool head at the back, needs to sort that back line out more from corners
Macari.. 8.. pick of the bunch at the back, always tried to go forward, great cross for Jatta..cracking player
Chicksen.. 6.. did nothing of note, lots of back and sideways passing, we got stronger when he went off
Crowley... 7.5.. Always dangerous, picks the ball up in pockets but his usual ball to Jones was very transparent.. should of scored one of his two chances but played well
Hinchy... 7.. decent if not spectacular...loves the ball but unfortunately didn't do a lot with it, improving all the time though
Jones.. 7.5.. mixed bag, looked to be carrying an injury as he struggled to take on his man, on the end of a nasty challange but tucked away the pen brilliantly
Scott.. 5.5.. Sorry but he had a stinker, lost his man for the first goal, offered nothing going forward..his first touch seems to knock the ball 5 yards in front of him, not his day
Grant.. 6.. Expected a lot more but he's just bedding himself in...tidy in possession without offering a lot going forward, will be a cracker for us
Jatta..7.. hard day for the big man, fed off scraps but took his goal well, needs decent service into the box and he was let down by terrible delivery today, still always a danger to the opposition
    Subs
Tsaroulla...7.. So much more possitve and apart from some ropey crosses I thought he was very good, great movement for the pen
Roberton.. 6.5.. working his way back in, nothing spectacular but played the ball around very well, had a decent chance which he smashed over
Ditzy... 7.5.. played out on the wing which was strange, wonderful ball which led to the pen...needs to be starting ahead of Scott
Palmer.. 6.5.. Great to see him back, very neat in possession and looked to play forward all the time...welcome back Matty
Manager.. 6.5.. Got the subs right but needs to work out why we are conceding so many... got out of jail today

A decent point from being 2 down but quite a frustrating afternoon.
2 very poor goals to concede. A straight ball over the top should not be landing between our defence and keeper for their second. That should have been bread and butter.
I noticed last week that we’re zonal marking corners. I’ve never been a fan of it because it leaves your defenders flat footed, challenging players that are running in. I’d need to see the first goal again but looked like they got in front of us to flick it in.
I appreciate Maynard probably wasn’t expecting to lose Nemane but Jones absolutely has to play on the left. With just one man in the box we need balls in early with pace whilst defenders are still facing their own goal. He still causes problems down the right but down the left he’s devastating.
Scott either needs to play up top or not at all for me.

Scott definitely needs to play up top. I feel sorry for him today, after all that time out, battling to come back from injury, and with a Langstaff-sized hole in the front-line begging to be filled, and his Head Coach plays him like a winger, leading some fans to say he's a waste of a shirt.

A manager's job is to deploy players in a way that they feel confident and can showcase themselves at their best. Luke Williams was masterful in doing so, to the extent that he revived the careers of some players previously written off. So much of Williams' genius was in its simplicity. Maynard seems to be one of those who spends so much time with his head in a tactics manual that he can't see the bloody obvious.

Would largely concur with all of these except for the manager - felt we got back into it inspite of him rather than because of him (haven’t heard his post-match interview yet where I’m sure he sees it differently).

As well as being obsessed with keeping the opposition manager guessing over the formation (this is a nice bonus but shouldn’t be what the whole selection is built around), he is badly misusing our best two players.

Jones on the right is bizarre; he can play there and will still cause problems but it shouldn’t be the norm. Why would you move someone with a record number of assists from the left to the opposite flank, just because he might score a couple of more goals himself? The supply to the strikers is completely lost, particularly with no Nemane/threat from the other side. The couple of times Jones got free in the first half were wasted as he had to check back to onto his left; as soon as he moved over to the left side for just a handful of minutes we had our best spell.

Similarly, Crowley is capable but wasted in a deeper role. Things only started to happen when he moved up the field today. And Scott starting over McGoldrick is absolutely bizarre, unless he’s trying to force him out. They’re in completely different leagues. Scott and Chicksen down the left offered is a Vanarama selection - offered nothing in an attacking sense. But it was hardly unexpected that that would be the case.

Bass - 7 - big improvement - would like to see his involvement in second goal again, could he have been quicker?

Macari - 6.5 - looks confident with ball at feet, would love him to commit full back more and drive with the ball, which would help Jones

Platt - 6.5 - again massive improvement and very simple, but let’s be honest shouldn’t have been on the pitch. Otherwise fine

Bedeau - 6 - caught a couple of times with straight balls otherwise again comfortable. Would like him and Platt to get it wide quicker rather than passing to eachother

Chicksen - 5.5 - can never really above this as he is so limited, feel a bit sorry for him that fans expect more. Would expect my left back/LWB to be able to open himself up and pass it down the line though…

Jones - 7.5 - brilliant - took penalty well, was absolutely electric WHEN ON THE LEFT.

Grant - 6 - looks a tidy footballer, not sure where he fits when palmer/robertson back with Crowley infront (if he’s here)

Hinchy - 6 - again looks tidy, would like him to play through lines more.

Scott - 4.5 - another one I feel sorry for, clearly out of position and no real idea of what to do. The left hand side of Chicksen and Scott is really poor.

Crowley - 7 - much better in second half when advanced, played the quarterback role well first half.

Jatta - 6.5 - Scored, not much else. First touch/runs were not good today. Would probably have got a hattrick if he stayed central like he did for the goal rather than constantly running to the back post behind defenders - near enough impossible to get a ball to him where he makes his runs.

    Subs:

Palmer - great to have him back and released DC
Tsaroulla - WOW - think we have a player on our hands here the spell with him and Jones was brilliant.
DMcG - unsure about left wing but everything stuck to him and his touch and composure are second to none.
Robbo - nice to have him back and have some bite in midfield - feels a bit lightweight with Hinchy/Grant/Crowley

Bass 6 - Quiet afternoon, not at fault for the two conceded
Macari 7 - Another very good game, at both ends
Platt 6 - Solid. In many games he'll have the ball more than any other player on the pitch so will have to use it better
Bedeau 6 - I'd like to see him be more positive. Too many passes to Chicksen
Hinchy 6 - Nothing too wrong, but we desperately needed a 6 to knit the play together today
Crowley 7 - Typical DC performance, was at the hub of most things for us
Jones 7 - I thought this was one of his wasteful days, but mixed in with being a constant menace to them.
Grant 6 - Some good moments, but didn't claim the shirt
Scott 4 - It's just not working out
Chicksen 6 - Tidy enough, same solid but bland performance as last week
    Jatta 5 - Even with a goal, I think that was a sub-par game.

    Subs
Robertson 4 - I don't think he's the guy to bring on when you're chasing the game.
Palmer 5 - Great to see him back
Tsaroulla 7 - MoM, the shirt is yours - can't ask for much more from a sub
McGoldrick 7 - Really good short cameo

A left-sided forward role genuinely would be up for grabs between Scott and McGoldrick, but the left winger role they were both shoehorned into today will do neither of them any good.

First half, way too pedestrian for the home team. We have to move tge ball quicker and have more confidence to make things happen.

Jones on the right is like driving a ferrari with the handbrake on. It's no coincidence our best spell was when Jones was on the left.

Scott is a good player, but needs to be put in a position that gets the most from him. He was below par today, but I blame that on the tactics.

Maynard... got out of jail, but a draw was definitely deserved. However, Fleetwood were average at best and we need to be beating teams like that at home if we're serious about promotion. Maynard is proving a little stubborn I fear and will persist rather than admit mistakes.
