I started watching, football in the early 70's. I remember my Dad watching a Liverpool game in tv and tutting as a heavily permed Kevin Keegan indulged himself by running into the kop after a goal.
My old man said ' it was way over the top' and that in his day, it was a pat on the back and a handshake between players after a goal. I thought he was being old fashioned but now I feel the same.
Watching Ronaldo's monstrous ego in the Portugal game and Bellingham, standing arms out- stretched like Christ the Redeemer is way over the top, for people who play a game for a living.
I think they have lost all perspective because we build them up too much.
Quick answer - yes
I'd take the theatrics and excessive praise over some of the other trends which seem to come with today's game.
1. Throwing beer around in fan zones etc when a goal is scored.
2. Pseudo-experts overcomplicating the game - "he's the best number 10 in the league, but he's rubbish if he's 3 inches further back and doesn't have the right sort of deep-lying, left sided, semi-Makalele, half-twist double-pike player behind him"
3. Complaining about footballers having opinions (whilst also complaining that today's players are dull and have no personality...?!?!?)
Let young uns have their heroes I've had mine.
