    National Trust…

My local online rag is giving away a free family pass worth £50 and its got me thinking, are there any red squirrel related National Trust parks in Cumbria that I could visit?

If anyone could use the pass themselves then just visit Nottinghamshire Live

Most of the Lake District is National Trust, Chalky, and you don’t need a membership to go there. I’ve seen them around Aira Force, which is National Trust, but get there early after they’ve put the feeders out. Also at the osprey viewpoint above Bassenthwaite (not sure it’s there at present) where the squirrels come for the bird food. Otherwise, head for the woods and keep your eyes peeled.

I will be doing MI5 worthy intelligence for this trip and I’m gonna leave nothing to chance, the free NT pass runs out on Tuesday 1st September which coincidentally is the day that Notts take on Carlisle so I see this as a message from God to get my arse up there that week, the Monday will be spent at Aira Force as it’s top of the list for Cumbrian squirrel spitting on the NT website,if there’s any charges my pass should cover it, Tuesday will be taking in the views and the game and Wednesday I will head home with three points and finally knocking red squirrels off my bucket list, thanks griffy 😎

    Cumbria: The lakes and coast

    Ch5 9pm Tuesday

I’ve just noticed a new series that’s starts tomorrow about Cumbria as well and some of you dare deny the existence of a God,What more proof do you need?

If you go to Aira force, just up from the car-park on the right is where the feeders are, some behind a fence. I think they fill then early on before they open so just after they let folk in would be the best time. Good luck with that, but as the Lakes is God’s Own Country I’m doubting the points.

best place to see red squirrels in cumbria

Smardale Nature Reserve, near Kirkby Stephen
Stunning scenery surrounds the steep wooded slopes of Smardale Gill. Red squirrels can be seen racing between the trees. Only 10 years ago, reds were almost extinct here following an influx of greys. Thankfully reds are now once again thriving.

Maybe give this a try Chalky. 👌

The type of trees is important, a park ranger told me that in Northumberland, when I asked him the best place to go in the country park we were in he said not here mate, try a different park a few miles away… WTF are the beware squirrel signs for then 🤷*♂️🤬

Cheers Alfie,Aria force to Kirkby Stephen is a 45 minute drive away so I could easily do both in the same day and Carlisle is about 30 minish from there, everything relatively close to each other but I’m leaving nothing to chance this time and I’m gonna delve deeper into it later next week,I’ve got a good feeling about it this time as all the stars seem to be aligning

Cumbria is a beautiful place to visit but I would like to blend in with the locals and not look like a tourist,do you wear flatcaps that far north or does it stop at Lancashire?
