    School exclusions and expulsions.

Apparently they are at a record high. The powers that be give various reasons, or should I say excuses. It’s put down to poverty, mental illness, the pandemic, children’s special needs not being adhered to and so on.

However, there was no mention of an expectation of discipline. Too many excuses are made for a child’s poor behaviour. It’s never their fault but someone elses. If a child misbehaves then there should be a punishment appropriate to the crime and should be implemented. They need to know the boundaries and what will happen if they cross them. Parental attitudes are also a contributing factor.

As an ex-teacher I understand the problems but believe society is to blame. ‘Too much understanding and not enough discipline!’

A child is the product of the parent! My mother in law was a head of a school in a rough area and said the kids had no chance as parents didn’t want homework and didn’t re-enforce the school values. Parents who home school for example have bright kids because they spend so much time with them - reading - museums- history etc. Look what a child can learn by going to Rome etc as opposed to a U.K. seaside where it’s amusement arcades and bingo plus dad in Wetherspoons FFS!

If I had the cane at school - my dad whacked me too when I came home. Parents should be made responsible for their kids under 16 - ie if they chuck a brick through a shop window then make the parent pay!

Teachers too should have a module in their teacher training on stronger discipline so every new teacher is consistent with strictness and punishment.

All about expectations! My kids were bright as we did so much with them and the expectation from secondary school was they would all get excellent A Levels and go on to Uni.

Lots of things are passed on from parents even anxiety - nervousness - even being ill. I was never allowed to be ill and things like colds etc didn’t exist with my dad. You opened a window and got some fresh air and got on with life.

Lots of things feed into this and it is certainly true that schools now are simply too understaffed and underfunded to meet the needs of many children on the spectrum of additional needs but totally agree with many of the above comments. There is far too much pandering these days to both parents and children's "rights" so small wonder that so many leave school and find it difficult to then adjust to the rules and discipline in the workplace.

So many parents too are abdicating their responsibilities whether that is toilet training, discipline or support with homework etc. For me, the fad to increase child care places in order to enable parents of young children back into the workplace asap is exactly the wrong thing to do.

The ages 0-5 are when children hit their key milestones in development and unless we are happy to continue as we are then it would be a lot better to enable at least one parent to stay at home with their children until school age rather than offering cheap childcare that does little or nothing for that child's development. Sadly, as this has now become a generational issue, it will also likely mean that support groups will be needed to teach some of these parents how to actually parent as they themselves were likely farmed out at that age and have had no role model to learn from.

Sometimes, things actually were generally better in our day!
