    Grimsby Match Ratings

Bass 7 - looked calm and composed. Made a decent save to keep it 1-0, distribution was decent and claimed a few crosses competently too.

Bedeau 7 - very decent performance, won the ball with authority many times and didn't look too bad on the ball either.

Platt 6.5 - The weakest of the back 3 for me. Misjudged a few aerial balls and looked a bit shaky with the ball at his feet. Still not bad by any means though and made some ***** challenges too.

Macari 7.5 - Very good performance again.

Tsaroulla 7 - Looked positive and provided us with a actually outlet on the left, and looked pretty good defensively too.

Jones 8.5 - Very good yet again from Jodi, scored, beat his man time and time again and probably deserved some assists with the balls he put into the box too.

Robertson 6 - Wasn't on the pitch long enough to really influence anything significantly. Just hope whatever issue he had isn't serious.

Edwards 8 - Great performance. Ran everywhere, played some great passes, and pressed very well.

Grant 6.5 - Yet again, he grafted and put in a lot of work but was a bit of a bystander.

Crowley 9 - Superb from Dan. Got his assist and probably should've got more, got two goals and deserved at least one more too. Ran the show from start to finish and is a truly excellent player. Did notice he was asking to be subbed off towards the end, although he couldn't as we'd made all our subs, so hopefully he's not struggling with anything at all.

Jatta 7 - Got his goal and held the ball up well occasionally, but ended up a little isolated at times.

Hinchy 7 - Tidy and not afraid to put his foot in.

Palmer 6 - Kept things ticking over when he came on, although misplaced the first pass I've ever seen him do.

Scott 6.5 - Looked bright and showed a lot of energy when he came on. Maybe should've done better with his chance at the back post but I couldn't see it clearly.

Austin 6.5 - Looked reasonably good at right wing back. Him playing there brought back memories of him running the show from that position against Southend nearly two years ago.

McGoldrick 6.5 - Worked hard and did a decent job defensively too.

Overall a really good display. I still think we allowed them far too many chances for me to feel entirely comfortable, especially in the first half and we still look a little dodgy defending set pieces too. But, barring the first 5 minutes, we managed the game excellently in the second half and probably should've added more to the scoreline than we did. Well done to players, SM and the management team and I hope see more of it this season, continuing at Swindon.

Those are very good ratings. I'll go

Bass 6 - Not a great deal to do
Macari 7 - Can he get less than a good 7? Doesn't look like it
Platt 7 - Impressive, but not for the whole game
Bedeau 8 - His best yet, fantastic potential for us
Robertson 6 - Wish him a speedy recovery
Edwards 7 - Very efficient with the ball
Jones 9 - Roasts defenders for fun
Grant 6 - OK, obviously outshone by the others
Crowley 10 - Or is that an 11? You can't be better than DC was tonight
Tsaroulla 7 - Gives the side great balance, looks a great signing
Jatta 8 - His best yet

    Subs
Hinchy 6 - Great start coming on but regressed to the mean a bit. His best game so far?
Palmer 7 - Nice sub performance
    McGoldrick 6 - Got involved
    Austin 6 - OK
Scott 7 - Came on with energy, some good moments

Bass - 7 - Again not much to do and no chance with the goal, but he can have a seven because I’m so traumatised by last season that not panicking every time the opposition cross the ball is a lovely feeling.

Macari - 7 - He’s so good. We’ll sell him for big money next summer.

Platt - 6 - I think he’s a good signing, but does seem slightly hesitant over whether to attack long balls over the middle or not.

Bedeau - 7 - Looks good to me, solid and progressive on the ball without ever leaning into being Baldwin style stupid.

Jones - 9 - He’s just really good. Think they had an inexperienced left back out and he just couldn’t get near him. Worked hard and did well defensively as well.

Tsaroulla - 7 - Much quieter going forward than Sunday, but gave us much better balance.

Robertson - 6 - Had to go off before you could mark him really, hope he’s okay.

Crowley - 10 - God knows when I last gave a 10, but he was so, so good. If someone from a higher league comes in and chucks a load of cash then fair enough, but we shouldn’t bother even talking to MK.

Grant - 7 - Nice movement between the lines, think he’s got real potential.

Edwards - 8 - Thought he was great playing in a surprisingly attacking role, unlucky not to get two or three assists.

Jatta - 7 - Led the line well and got his customary bundled over the line goal. If we can tidy up his all round game then he’s another big money sale.

Subs all fine without standing out. 6.5s all round.

Good ratings so far. I think everyone agrees that they all played well, and some were exceptional. That was the first game under SM where I felt that was as good as anything form the LW era.

Rating them by 'department' that was the best midfield performance I have seen from Notts in a long time. Physically imposing midfield generals are not needed when you have mobile, agile, aggressive midfielders pressing hard and zipping around hoovering up second balls, then using the ball quickly and accurately. Very encouraging, especially considering a first choice midfielder had to go off after 20.

The defenders played well but still managed to concede a poor goal from a set piece. It's early enough in the season to hope this is teething trouble and getting used to each other, but if it's still happening after 5/10 games it'll be a worry. Noticeable upgrades from last season though are that both the new CBs will go for a tackle if they see the ball to be won, and most likely win it. The passing out from the back seems more purposeful as well, especially from Bedeau.

Up front Jatta continues to do the business. He can seem ungainly in the build up but he rarely wastes a chance - he always seems to get a decent effort away.

A great evening's work, well done to all involved. Now it's just about doing it consistently.

Bass - 7 - DonÂ’t remember him having much to do but just gives off a real air of calm.

Macari - 7.5 - Excellent again. Just does everything really well.

Platt - 7 - Looks strong in that central position. Misjudged one or two balls but nothing to worry about.

Bedeau - 7.5 - Excellent last night. A real athlete; up and down all night. Able to cover well for the space left around him by the marauding Crowley and Tsaroulla.

Jones - 9 - A threat wherever he is on the pitch. Looks a yard quicker this season too.

Robertson - 6 - Hopefully heÂ’ll be back without much issue. Look assured for 25 minutes.

Crowley - 9.5 - One of the best individual performances IÂ’ve seen from a Notts player in a long time. Was on a different level. A joy to behold.

Tsaroulla - 7.5 - Looks an impressive signing; canÂ’t wait to see him when heÂ’s fully fit.

Edwards - 8 - Thought he was class. So at ease on the ball. Great engine on him too. Another astute signing.

Grant - 6.5 - Grew into it. ThereÂ’s definitely a player in there, just needs to be allowed time to make it all click.

Jatta - 8 - Excellent again last night. If he stays fit, and Jones and Crowley stay, I reckon he could be getting 25/30 goals.

Hinchy - 7.5 - A step up from Sunday. Looked so confident with the ball and not afraid to battle either.

Palmer - 7 - Just did Matt Palmer things. LetÂ’s just keep building him back up.

Austin - 6.5 - Held his width well. Tidy in possession. Will have a big part to play this season.

McGoldrick - 6.5 - Looked sharp. Some good play. Needs a goal.

Scott - 6.5 - Looked eager to impress and definitely did in his cameo. Another who will have his time this season.

Maynard - 9 - When Tsaroulla and Jones are available, that formation is a must. Pleasing to see we can mix it up too, especially when the ball is with Bass, the back three and the CDMÂ’s. Played out superbly a few times last night but only when it was the right time. Got rid when necessary.

Also pleasing to see that tactically heÂ’s been flexible. The Baldwin issue has been dealt with; Platt isnÂ’t quite as quick so he hasnÂ’t asked him to sweep and try to play in possession as much as he asked Baldwin too. This has definitely made us stronger.

Plenty on here stressed out when Crowley was asked to play deeper. So far, so good I’d say.

I’ll only dispute your point about the defenders conceding a poor goal from a set piece. That’s a team issue and we have conceded 2 out of 3 league goals from set piece.
The only goal I’ll put on the defence so far is the second v Fleetwood.
The defence is infinitely better in every aspect. Use of the ball. Decision making. Pace. Power. Physicality.
No defence in football is infallible. However, I have more confidence in this defence.

Edwards looked brilliant last night in an advanced role. He was always an option for a pass with which opened up space for Crowley and Jones to carry the ball into a bit more.

He seems very unselfish in his play too, played a couple of decent balls through when most players would have had a shot.

Grant I feel just needs time on the training pitch with our style. Cant forget he's only been here a couple of weeks.

My only concern from last night was we looked vulnerable on the break, but I guess thats because we commit so many forward.

The defence will become stronger the more they play together and understand each others positioning/covering abilities.

So far a good start to the season I'd say.

Fair points. I would only dispute the word infinitely - the rest I agree with.

First time I have seen them this season due to holiday so this is how I saw it.
Bass gives me so much more confidence than any of our previous keepers since Patterson.
Macari looks so much more mature than last year.
Platt is the stopper we craved, maybe lacks a bit of pace but defensive midfield will have to cover.
Beddau, I wouldn't like to face someone like him every week! Looks mean.
Tsourella, energy and pace and a great name to chant for the fans.
Grant, I can't believe we got this chap. He has so much quality
Edwards, why has this man not been scouted before? I thought we signed him as a stop gap for Matty, but boy can he play.
It's only one game but Palmer, Jones, Jatta and Crowley will only be better for the upgrade in quality team mates.
    BUZZING!
