    Duos

Last night was top entertainment and in the middle of it were our 2 star turns Jones and Crowley.

It set me thinking about other duos I've seen over the years, where a team revolved around 2 stand-out ball players

    Any advance on these?

    - Keegan's Man City was all about Berkovic and Benarbia. I know they had Goater, but those first two ran the whole show
    - Barnes and Beardsley, late 80s Liverpool
    - A few seasons ago I was watching Villa and for a short period, Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley was a great watch playing together.

Probably the last time we thought about this at Notts was when Ruben and Cal paired up, but apart from a few moments it didn't happen (my take was that CR was trying too much to be top dog). And these last two examples are a worry, they didn't last even half a season.

Any others? We're not talking about great single players like Maradona who dominated, or great teams that had stars all over like Brazil 82, but teams, at any level, built around two star playmakers.

Again for the level we find ourselves in, Bobby Ham and Kevin Hector for Bratfud P.A. in the 60s.

Nice one, and Smash 'n' Grab.
I'm seeing strike partnerships as a separate category, another lower league one that stood out was Deane and Agana.
We'd have Toshack and Keegan, Shearer and Sutton, Shearer and Sheringham.
Centre-halves would be another and we could offer Stubbs and Needham, Short and Yates.

That's a stretch. I don't think Edwards, as well as he played, got anywhere near the level of JJ in terms of getting on the ball and terrorising the opposition. But it's a good point that when two reach a certain level of confidence and play, others around them will raise their levels too.

On Crowley, we can now say for sure that LW missed a trick when he didn't drop him deeper and onto the ball when we suddenly lost Palmer and Bostock.

Remember when Crowley arrived and he couldn't get over 'all the detail' he was being presented with. Probably LW couldn't get past having Crowley in the same familiar slots to play moves 27A or 16B (ways of playing in Nemane), but we had other players for there, and Crowley would've helped our midfield problems for a while.
The freedom SM seems to be willing to give DC and JJ is a mouth-watering prospect for the entertainment we could get this season.

Another - Lennon and Murphy for Crewe, those two certainly showed how you could play possession football in the lower leagues.

I wonder if anyone can remember Crewe winning 0-1 at Meadow lane with those two running the show.

The issue we have now and the owners more, is we have 2 players I think could clearly play in the champ and earn very good money with a year left on their contracts, what do the club do????

Agana and Deane. Mistake to only buy one.

Hartley and Poole for Hartlepool must be a contender.
