Theories on injury crisis at Spurs

I thought this would be of interest as some of the same conversations have been had in relation to our own injuries.

I like Onuoha, good pundit all round.

I do struggle to agree with his assertion that if players (Romero and van der Ven in his example given) are desperate to play, but there are questions over their fitness then he cannot see how it can be put down to his call.

I 100% appreciate football is a results game but if there are doubts over a players fitness, and the consensus from the data is it would be a risk to play them, that is 100% on the manager.

Clubs have a duty of care to their players. Managers, when selecting a team, have that duty of care too.

Sometimes those decisions will pay off, for Spurs they did not.

I do agree most players are probably never 100% fit and have niggles, so clearly it is a fine line. But not putting the onus on a manager is odd.

Actually in many clubs it's the medical team who make the decision as to when a player can return, especially after a long break and rehab
Not sure it's the case with us but I'd be surprised if it wasn't
But the player will have a big say in it, particularly if he's one of the senior guys

True. But if a manager wants to either start, bring on, or not play a player, ultimately he is making the decision.

It must be tremendously difficult to balance it all when selecting a team, but I am not sure saying you cannot put it down to the manager is correct.

What happens though if a player insists that he is OK to play? I think it needs players to always be honest - and even then there will be times when they genuinely believe they will be fine.

The injury level threshold at which players don't play now has lowered significantly from what it was when I first watched Notts (early 70s) I think - that is why we got through seasons with such a small squad. It was more physical but arguably less athletic.

It happens all the time, especially with senior players who want to play ASAP after being out for a long stretch
Most times there will be a discussion and the medical team/manager will make the final call
But if it's someone like Van Der Ven at Spurs, who is so important to them then it makes it a bit more complicated
He came back after a hamstring injury earlier this season and broke down again after his first flat out sprint.
I notice he was subbed at half time in his most recent reappearance

You only have to look at the games on ITV4 from the 70's and 80's to see the change in the way the game is played
It's far quicker now with players making many more sharp turns with a good number of injuries happening when the player hasn't been even been challenged by an opponent
And watching teams pass back to the keeper and him picking it up to give everyone a breather before booting it back upfield
    It's definitely an eye opener

The issue at Notts is compounded by the fact that many of our signings have a history of injuries. In some cases they are signed with an injury.
The club take a punt and sometimes it works out. If we are going to continue this approach then we ought to have a bigger squad for insurance.

The single best change in football IMO was goalkeepers not being able to pick up a back pass. Probably a close winner to the significant change to the offside rule where a player has to interfere.
Can you imagine Man City keeping the ball and just killing games by dropping back to the keeper who could pick it up? I?m shuddering at the thought.
The next change that needs implementing ASAP is keepers going down with cramp or some other bogus injury should mean another player has to leave the pitch for 30 seconds.

Good one! It will affect Notts as well though.

He does mention that in the article that a lot of players will say they're fine and continue playing with minor knocks.
