Thread: Are RUFC a bigger club than Shrewsbury?

Are RUFC a bigger club than Shrewsbury?

Talking to some Shrews fans after the game- great fellas- and I put forward my view that Tony Stewart should sack Evans and pinch Gareth Ainworth from them.

All of them were incredulous. They all said Ainsworth would only leave to manage a bigger club, an.idea naturally started a debate.

So are we bigger than Shrewsbury or not?

No. A traditionally league one club with spells above and below that is a description that fits both. The notion of clubs like that arguing over which is bigger is nonsense.

For context I?d say the only smaller clubs than us are the ones who came up from the conference for the first time after promotion started in 1987, the likes of Cheltenham, Burton, Harrogate etc. Bigger clubs than us at this level would be traditionally higher and always able to rely on five figure attendances, ie Charlton, Brum etc, in between those two levels there is nothing to choose in terms of any meaningful size difference.

I would have thought that club and manager was a good fit. And as a supporter you should join them.

Marginally, probably. Not so much that anyone would move for some sort of prestige though. We're a club which should be bigger given our population, but we are very much a small club.

Reasons why RUFC are bigger than Shrewsbury.

    1. We have spent more time in the 2nd tier. Especially recently.
    2. We haven?t been in the 5th tier (yet) unlike them.
    3. We have been in a major cup final.
    4. We?ve won the EFL trophy twice.
    5. Our attendances are higher.

I will check if they own their own stadium as that could be a point to them.

Not sure the League Cup was even taken seriously the year we got to the final and they were semi-finalists that year too. They have also been to 2 FA Cup quarter finals so point 3 is probably canceled out.

They have been watched by a crowd of over 60,000 at Wembley albeit probably made up of a majority of Bristol Rovers fans.

    They do own their ground.

All in all I'd say we're equally sized.

I would say definitely made up by Bristol Rovers fans considering we have played them twice at Wembley and been nowhere near that attendance.

4-2 to Rotherham if you?re discounting the league cup final 😂

At least we don’t try and kick players in the air.
