Watched the bbc documentary last night, 40 years on from the fire https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002c62k
One of the things that surprised me was the number of smaller fires in football grounds in the early 80s, yet it appears no major changes had been made to the safety measures that may have prevented 56 fires being lost. Exits at the back of the stand being locked!
Remember watching that horror unfold on tv, think we must have been playing away and not attending.
I’d sat in that same stand a few years earlier when we played there, poky horrible and cramped stand it was too.
Our old stand whilst had slightly better access was probably a tinder box with 80 years of rubbish that had collected underneath.
Watched the programme last night.
Question was once asked, why was there rubbish under the stand, a fire officer would have surely said having a collection point under a wooden stand for rubbish is not acceptable.
Non combustion materials should have been stored under the stand.
Always remember the date, which is myself & my wife's wedding anniversary, yesterday married 57 years.
Plus the day & time of the fire I was ina bar in Benidorm having a drink
