Charlton suffered a real mauling at the hands of Southampton who scored four goals in the space of eight minutes. Injuries have not helped but even the extent of the drubbing was not predicted. Without the core of the team, players who have not had much game time came on as subs. The Saints played in behind the Charlton defence, Azaz scoring two of their five goals.
Jones scored a consolation goal for the Add1cks in first half stoppage time. The second half was a more muted affair.
It's only the second defeat at the Valley in 2025 but exposes the weaknesses in the squad when it's not at its full strength. Southampton on the other hand played brilliantly and will climb the table on this form. The Add1cks however, will need a resolute and bold performance against Stoke away on Tuesday.
Charlton goal: Jones 45+1
Southampton goals: Manning 14, Armstrong 16, Jander 20, Azaz 22, 44
