MillersMad Match Thread...Millers v Huddersfield Town

It's time for another Yorkshire derby on Saturday and this time sees us welcome Huddersfield Town to the New York Stadium.

    The Boss
Lee Grant, the former Sheffield Wednesday and Derby goalkeeper was appointed in the summer on a 3 year deal. Since then, it's fair to say that the 42 year old hasn't had the best of starts to his managerial career. Town have only won 3 league games since 6th September, a run clearly unsustainable for an expectant fan base. As a result, it is no surprise that pressure is mounting on the rookie manager.

    Who To Watch
Alfie May has had an excellent scoring record over the last few seasons. He got 17 goals for Birmingham last season and 27 for Charlton in the season before that. Huddersfield paid 1.4m for his services in the summer but on the face of it he's yet to find his shooting boots for the Terriers, scoring only 3 goals so far this season.

    Marcus Harness
Harness is a former Derby player who Hamshaw will know well from his time there as coach. Prior to Derby, the central midfielder was also a regular in the Ipswich team which won successive promotions from L1 to the Premier League. He's a capable player with bags of experience at Championship level.

    Dion Charles
Regularly on the scoresheet for his former club Bolton, the 30 year old striker seems to be finding goals hard to come by. He's found the net 4 times for the Terriers this season in 18 appearances.

    Last 6
    Huddersfield 1 v 1 Wigan (L1)
    Northampton 1 v 1 Huddersfield (L1)
    Cardiff 3 v 2 Huddersfield (L1)
    Lincoln 0 v 2 Huddersfield (Vertu)
    Huddersfield 3 v 3 Wimbledon (L1)
    Luton 2 v 1 Huddersfield (L1)

    Latest Odds
    Millers 23/10 Draw 12/5 Terriers 21/20

    Recent Meetings
    (4/1/2025)
    Huddersfield 0 v 0 Rotherham (L1)

    (31/8/2024)
    Rotherham 2 v 1 Huddersfield (L1)
    Clarke-Harris (pen), Wilks.

    Summary
On paper, Huddersfield have undoubtedly one of the better squads in the league and clearly the financial backing to give them the edge over most at this level. However, they have only picked up three wins in the league since September 6th (a run of 13 games) and are currently without a win in five. Sitting 9th in the table, there's growing unrest amongst supporters. An early goal for us on Saturday might be something they don't recover from.

With that in mind, now is probably the best time to be playing the Terriers. That being said, we are going into the game off the back of two straight defeats against teams who are in the bottom four and like Huddersfield, we're also without a win in 5 league games. So it wouldn't come as a surprise to hear the opposition echoing similar thoughts.

Looking ahead, we're away at Bolton and then Blackpool, which makes this a big game for us. We've seen how quickly things can change and given the fact we're only 2 points off the relegation zone, a win on Saturday would ease some of that pressure before going into those two away fixtures.

There's plenty at stake for both sides on Saturday, possibly for different reasons which makes it an intriguing contest.

    Enjoy it everyone and UTM.

A very important match and with players coming back we should be more balanced.Assuming Nombe will be in the squad, that will be a massive bonus. We have talented players and when they're all fit we are a side that can take anybody in this division.

There tomorrow it's just me I either rate players or don't no inbetween. Don't like cut inside wide players for a start. Thought we'd sent Etete back? should in January a sicknote.

Tom Johnston was manager of both clubs, he took the Millers to the first ever league cup final, he
also managed Huddersfield Town 3 times.
Remember going to Huddersfield Town to a away game against the Millers, when Johnston was the Terriers manager.
Me & mate has young uns had gone early, & took a ball, & was having a kick about in the car park,
Tom Johnston came over & had a kick about with us.
Be hopes ex-Miller player Ben Wiles doesn't have a good game against us.

    That's a great story Ericslad!

Tom Johnstone was at Rotherham when I first started going to matches and those were generally good years.

To date Rotherham and Huddersfield have faced each other 64 times in all competitions. Huddersfield Town seem to be the draw specialists when it comes to matches played at Rotherham, they have quiet a unique record against their Yorkshire rivals.
Like last weeks opponents Plymouth, the first meeting between the two clubs came in the 1952/53 season, Huddersfield winning 1-0 at Leeds Road with Vic Metcalfe scoring the only goal of the game in front of 31,312.
To date Rotherham have won 21% (7), drawn 52% (17) and lost 27% (9) at home.
The highest attendance at home to Huddersfield Town was in the return game of the 1952/53 season, it was Rotherham's 1,000 match and 19,777 watched a goalless draw on the final League match for that season. That match was to be the last appearance for Jack Shaw, who still holds the record of scoring the most goals (147*) for Rotherham United in all competitions, and the highest goalscorer in the FA Cup (18). The lowest attendance at home came in the Football League Trophy in the 1994/95 season when 1,598 saw that drawing trend continue. Rotherham's Imre Varadi cancelling out Rodney Rowe's first half goal for Town.
Rotherham have an average attendance at home to Huddersfield of 9,133.
Rotherham have an average of 1.48 goals per game at home to Huddersfield. Huddersfield?s average goals per game away at Rotherham is 1.55.

*Its always debatable to what goals to include for Jack Shaw's goal record stated above. For matches during WW2: Included all SHFACC and the FA Cup 1945/46, goals not included North Regional League 1944/45 (5), Third Division (East) (9) and Third Division Cup (1945/46) (7). So it's fair to say his overall goal tally could total 168.
I should point out that any of the figures above arent official and the club may well hold totally different records.

I don't think Ben Wiles will play. And by all accounts, most Huddersfield fans think he's a terrible player.

I had to laugh at the international hide and seek champion comment 😂
