Just been looking at these, in the second tier obviously:

1. 1954-55 3rd
2. 1953-54 5th
3. 1981-82 7th (67 points, 47 equivalent for 2 points a win)
4. 1965-66 7th (46 points)
5. 1963-64 7th (45 points)
6. 1959-60 8th
7. 1951-52 9th (42 points)
8. 1961-62 9th (41 points)
9. 1952-53 12th
10. 1962-63 14th

Bit depressing really when you peaked in the 50s and 60s.

Apart from one good month (February 1982) it's basically been 50 years since our 'heyday' and most on here remember it

Talking NUMBERS - just been looking at the points the relegated teams had and they are getting lower - barring that unlucky time Peterborough ? went down with 54 pts ( I think - looked at "numbers" tuther day and wrote numbers down - forgot who did what....lol )

Trend is down because everybody is beating everybody else? If that was the case the trend would be up because the lower teams would be getting more points as in that 2012-13 season when Peterborough were relegated and only missed the playoffs by 14pts. Trend is more likely down because the lesser teams are getting beaten up on by the top ones and there has been a stand out 'donkey' e.g. Blackpool, Bolton. Let's hope that's not us this season.

The average of those 14 seasons is 47pts (if you take into account that in 2011-12 the real number was 48 because Barnsley would have been relegated with that number if Portsmouth hadn't had a 10pt deduction) so at the moment we are just over 5pts behind a realistic target or to put that in cold hard fact, we need to win the next 3 games to get where we need to be. Lose them and then we need to win the next 4......etc.

I take your point CAM - but the "elite" are certainly not getting their own way this season - although I'll be SUPRISED if the the stronger squads won't float to the top over the season - notably Derby & Villa.

The league is compressing below the top 3 or 4 teams - making it very competitive!

Peterborough were very unlucky being relegated on 54 - as you say 14 points off the play-offs. Unbelievable Geoff !

That 5 points off the pace statement would not be the case with just a smidgeon of luck on our part - We've had a very tough start and NO lucky goals yet ( ok that Halford screamer ) - but after the Norwich match ( which even I think we might only scrape a draw ) - the real mid season battles take place.....

And I think we are now ready to show what we can do....let's hope your graph gets steeper....lol

1954-55 when we finished third behind Birmingham and Luton. Two things strike me; the first may well be apocryphal but my dad swore it was true and the second may be plain wrong as I can't be rrsed to check.
First, that Doncaster Rovers deliberately screwed us by losing something like 0:6 at home to Birmingham at the end of the season.
Second, we stayed down on goal average but would have gone up on goal difference.
No idea if either or both are true but they make a good story anyway.

Doncaster lost their last two games, both at home, 3-0 against Luton on April 30th and 5-1 against Birmingham on May 4th. If they had taken a point from either we would have been promoted. Our last game was May 2nd at Millmoor where we beat Liverpool 6-1 so Birmingham had the advantage of playing 2 days after us. Goal differences were Birmingham 45, Luton 35, Millers 30 so no we wouldn't have been promoted on that versus goal average.

Honestly though it was interesting to do the research and find out more details of what happened that season. It also gives me a good reason now to dislike Donny (nothing like bearing a 60 year old grudge ) although we lost 1-0 away at lowly Port Vale on April 30th so I'd say that was the 'killer' blow.
