Timothy Spall is a great and very underestimated actor. Done some great things, he was brilliant in Pierrepoint and Life is Sweet among other things.
The Black Country accent is one of the hardest to do, but he did it to perfection, so good in fact that Black Country people were arguing if it was a Tipton or Cradley accent. But the real genius of the character Barry was that Spall had him coming from West Brom. Now Spall it has to be said is an ugly git, and Barry had the intelligence of an house plant. Spall knew that no audience would accept Barry being a Baggie.

He was truly excellent throughout that show, not only the accent but the mannerisms too - as you say a very underestimated actor but well respected I'm sure.
