I can't find that criticism, Saxo. Where did you see it?
Mowbray made a general comment about what he expects from players, but it didn't strike me that he was implying Brereton wasn't working hard enough.
My feeling so far is that Brereton's positional sense and reading of the game need developing. I haven't seen signs that he's not trying.
TM often makes the point that players have to FORCE their way into this team because of the pre-existing work-ethic and spirit. Getting past Smallwood is a case in point. We all know that he's the least technically-gifted player in the team, but he has fought off challengers because of his fantastic commitment and work-rate. (I suspect Rothwell may be alongside Evans against Swansea, but Mowbray often surprises).
Players like Brereton and Palmer are not shown special privileges because of their skill-level; they still have to demonstrate the "soldier" qualities TM prizes so highly. I suspect Reed has already passed that test.
Incidentally, the fact that Reed is seen as cover for both central midfield and right-back presumably means that Travis will definitely be going out on loan in January.
I hope he goes to a team that gives him plenty of game-time, because his ability is not being fully utilised, floating - as he is - around the subs' bench and the Under-23s.
T=You have said everything I wanted to Auks.
That was categorically NOT criticising the lad. What he was doing is telling him what to improve in order to get in our side.
To get in our starting 11 you have to be playing at a really high level. And that's not enough. You also have to work damned hard.
If you don't do either, you benched.
Ben has to be better than Graham, and Dack. And Armstrong.
From what you have seen Sax, do you think he has done enough to force his way in? And worked hard enough?
TM is his manager, so he is telling him how to get in our side, and what's expected.
He's a young lad, plenty of time for him to develop and an excellent team around him to help that.
Did very well on Saturday.
You should've heard the abuse Dack used to get in the first few games last season. The clowns don't abuse him now. But they where expert enough to state he was crap before seeing him properly.
Heard it all before. Ben will come good. He is a decent player, and will get better.
I steer clear of reading anything pointless, I'm not reading that thing Saxo posted. No point.
Ben hasn't started a game and has only played a very small part. Give him time, he will grow and get better in a quality side. With a quality manager who will get the best out of him.
I actually did have a quick look.
TM said this about Rothwell.
He said he had been excellent and played really well. But he wasnt puttting in the same running and effort the others had. The likes of Smallwood, Bennett, Graham.
He said to him, ''no matter how well you play, if you don't put the work in, you will be sat next to me on the bench.''
Bennett, Smallwood, Evans, Mulgrew, and Graham are all playing the best football of their career's, have never looked fitter and have never had a bigger impact than they are now. Alot of them are in the final part of their career.
If Ben Brereton wants to improve, he is at the best club to do so.
Its way too early to make a judgement on him. He is a 19 year old kid, with huge potential.
Soldiers and artists. Even the artists in our side put maximum effort in, like DACK.
That wasnt the case at first.
I've just relayed what the article says..
TM has criticised a lack of effort from the lad.. Wow.. That's pretty damning to go public like that.. Hope it has the effect we all hope for.
That above is how you interpret his words. All we are trying to explain is, that's not openly critising a kid. That's giving him sound advice as to what is expected.
This had has come to play, as he wasn't getting games.
If he wants to play, he best listen to his boss.
Mowbray is just an honest guy. Who will generally tell us as fans what he expects.
As I mentioned, he said the exact same thing about Rothwell.
Who has not put a foot wrong, been excellent when he has played. But has barley been given a chance due to not fulfilling what is expected. If he wants to get in the side, then he has to do what we expect.
If not, he will be sat next to TM on the bench.
TM wont let anyone take the easy road. Dack is our artist. He also works unbelievably hard.
Others need to take heed or they wont play.
